The Mezcalero “Los Nahuales” Special Edition No. 1 was originally released for the exclusive sale at K&L Wine Merchants, but became available at other retailers in late 2016. The marketed intent of this mezcal was to provide a new avenue for tequila drinkers to begin exploration into the world of mezcal. Most who have tried this would agree that it’s good for those with and without previous mezcal experience. This special edition is made with 58.5% maguey Sierrudo and 41.5% maguey Cuishe. The two types of agave were co-fermented by mezcalera Karina Abad Rojas, who is in charge of production for Los Nahuales, Alipus, and Mezcalero. The flavors of this mezcal are bright and well-defined. It has some sweetness and spice without being overly intense.

Los Nahuales Mezcal
Los Nahuales mezcal is distilled at the Déstileria Los Danzantes in Santiago Matatlan, the world capital of mezcal, south of Oaxaca city. The mezcals are branded as Los Nahuales in the USA due to trademark issues. Though the mezcaleros behind this mezcal have been making it for generations, the Los Danzantes brand has been around since 1997.

Just an awesome mezcal at an incredible price point (~$80 in chicago if you can find it now 😉 ) I’m a huge fan of sierrudo and even though it’s a near split on this with parts sierrudo and Cuishe, the sierrudo is very forward here. Perfumey, floral, and bright. Little to no burn and just a fantastic sipper— good mezcal to share with friends to introduce them to the world of mezcal as it’s very accessible

It has been gathering dust ever since … until I dusted it off last night and tasted it for the first time in years. What a pleasant surprise! Really enjoyable and quite complex on the palate with a resonating, long-lasting finish. I wish I could buy another bottle but that opportunity has long since passed.

3 reviewsSmells sweet and earthy. Bell peppers, slight oak smoke, tart and sweet cherries. Medium body. Tastes sweet, earthy. licorice, peppery, vegetal. Tasty mezcal this bottle. I think had the proportions of Cuishe and Sierrudo been switch, it would have been a .5 higher from me, since I enjoy Karwinskii flavors more than Americana typically. Still a solid mezcal.

6 reviewsThe aroma is sharp and deeply layered, with candle wax, vanilla, cream, leather, nougat, cucumber, honeydew, and cedar. The flavor is less aggressive than the aroma, and it is supported by a viscous and clinging mouthfeel. I detect notes of honey, paraffin, melon, cream, vanilla, roasted corn, and a very mild, silky smoke. The overall impression is rather sweet, quite easygoing, and definitely light on smoke, but big on layered, shifting flavors.

155 reviewsreally nice mezcal!first time to have a sierrudo agave.it fits the profile of americano.its bold and sweet up front and a strong note of black pepper kicks in mid way.this reminds me of the mezcalero #15(sierra negra).the cuishe is faint with vegetal notes on the end.no harsh notes.very pleasant spice and sweet balance.gets the saliva going!

643 reviewsIf you enjoy arroqueno mezcals you will enjoy this special Los Nahuales release. The sierrudo agave carries a lot of familiar arroqueno notes. The sierrudo dominates this ensamble (in a good way) and the cuishe compliments the bold Americana flavors nicely. There are some strong pepper flavors with notes of fruit, firewood, caramel, and peat. This unique ensamble is a limited-release so try it while you can.

708 reviewsVery good and complex. The nose has subtle notes of fresh green pepper and cantaloupe. Tasting notes include fresh ground black pepper, orange spice, and cayenne pepper. I get more agave Americano than Cuishe on this. It’s complex and (dare I say) suave. For it’s complexity, this is incredibly easy to drink.
