About this mezcal

Los Vecinos del Campo Espadin is produced in the Valles Centrales region of Oaxaca by a group of 10 master mezcaleros who use time-honored processes passed down by their ancestors to distill the small batches. The mezcaleros use locally grown and harvested agave Espadin and roast the agave piñas underground. The piñas are crushed using a stone molino, naturally fermented in wooden vats, and then double-distilled in copper pot stills. This mezcal is spicy up front and moves quickly to tropical fruits, ginger, and roasted peppers. Accolades from expert panels include 5 stars from F. Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal and 94 points from the 2018 Ultimate Beverage Challenge.

Los Vecinos del Campo Mezcal

Los Vecinos del Campo is a mezcal project from the Sazerac Company (makers of Buffalo Trace bourbon and many other brands) and Casa San Matías, one of the oldest tequila distilleries in Mexico. Carmen Villarreal, CEO, and owner of Casa San Matias is leading the project. Los Vecinos del Campo released its agave Espadin mezcal in December 2018 and two other expressions, agave Tobala and Ensamble No. 1, in late 2019.

Lot# MV2021ESP02
90 proof

Vegetal aroma when it first hits the copita but on closer inspection it’s heavily smoky like smoldering mesquite wood. Taste is very clean, minerally at first and less smoke than the nose would suggest. Light on the palate with a dry finish. A fair amount of alcohol burn given the ABV. Enjoyable to drink.

Got a bottle for around $25 so it was a definite value but I got caramelized sugar and tropical candy and not much else. Starting to see this more often and in a pinch, it will do the job as entry-level Espadin that just gets the job done.

Lot No: MV2020ESi
Nose: Shoe polish, leather, spearmint gum.

Palate: Hits you with a lot of heat up front – some viscosity to it. Cherry bubble gum and smoke – relaxed in the middle. A spicy, watermelon finish and the heat comes back swinging.

Great value espadin that continues to grow on me.

4 Star is for value. Fruity with a spicy finish, good mixer or campfire sipper.

A very clean, crisp, briny espadin; and a great value. Mango and papaya on the palate, and very smooth at 45% ABV. Good stuff. Lot # ESJ451803

Lot ESJ451801. Bubble gum and perfume over bitter spice and rum flavors. Good entry level espadin.

I give it 4 because its pretty good for the price. Typical smokey burnt mezcal character, little sweet, not bad for sipping.

Another new agave Espadin mezcal from Oaxaca.. it gets points for being 45% ABV. There are a lot of new brands out there and Los Vecinos del Campo is decent. It has some olive brine, lemon rind, and agave sugar. I’ll probably use it more for cocktails but it can get the job done as a casual sipper. Lot ESJ451803

Lot ESJ45180. Smells good and balanced. The palate is also very nice. After a long day, this is refreshing and crisp. There’s a bit of fruit and vanilla flavor with aromas of brine, seaweed, and fresh rhubarb. I’m enjoying this Espadin.

Solid, down the middle espadin. Very nice for a warm up mezcal. I believe it’s also inexpensive.
