The brand has ties to the brand Kimo Sabe and it is possible that the mezcal is exactly the same but in a different bottle. This mezcal is sold exclusively at Total Wine & More in the United States as part of their Spirits Direct program.
Luminar Mezcal
Luminar Mezcal uses select agaves grown in the Bajio and on the mountain tops in the state of Zacatecas. According to the brand, 254 farming families in Zacatecas have nurtured their agaves for years bring the world this mezcal. Luminar is exclusively available at Total Wine & More in the United States as part of their Spirits Direct program. The program allows wholesalers to clear spirits for reduced margins enabling Total Wine to sell spirits from smaller producers more profitably.
It should be noted that Luminar Mezcal is likely Kimo Sabe mezcal with a different label. Kimo Sabe filed for the trademark for Luminar Mezcal (source). Both brands also share the same NOM (Norma Oficial Mexicana) which is registered with the Mexican government.

Picked it up for mixed drinks because it was the cheapest thing and will only be using it for mixed drinks. Not a lot of complexity with a sharp aftertaste like rubbing alcohol.

Nose – Vanilla extract. Smells like a lower-end blanco tequila ($20-30 quality range) – not too bad.
Palate – Slight gummy bear sweetness and yellow dandelion hidden in smoky harshness. It’s maybe OK until the finish but then it’s a very rough, rubbing alcohol bite. You get what you pay for here.

5 reviewsHonestly, this isn’t as atrocious as I expected. As others have noted, it tastes like a cheap tequila, not a mezcal. I’d probably add a half star to my review if this were a tequila.
Not a whole lot going on with this one. Sweet, somewhat floral aroma, and a taste that yields…nothing, really. Very watery tasting, sweet, no smoke, no complexity. I won’t be having this one again.

I thought it was good, and I can tell really bad Mezcal and I know the difference when it is really, really good. Curious to see what other people are thinking?

39 reviewsI picked up a bottle in Total Wine as the price was attractive, unaware that this was a Kimo Sabe product. I have not tried Kimo Sabe, so I cannot say whether this is the same product with a different label. Either way there is not much going on with this Mezcal. It has a thin, harsh mouthfeel, no fruit or identifiable mineral elements on the palate or the finish, and tastes watered down at 80 proof. There is a hint of smoke, but no substance. A cheap cocktail mixer at best.
