About this mezcal

Macurichos Ancestral Arroqueño is produced using 100% Maguey Arroqueño (Agave americana) in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, México. The harvested agaves are cooked in an earthen oven, milled using a stone tahona mill, fermented in wooden vats, and distilled twice using clay pot stills. This mezcal is rich and textured with notes of vanilla, cream, butterscotch, and soft cheese.

Macurichos Mezcal

Led by maestro mezcalero Gonzalo Martinez, Mezcal Macurichos is dedicated to the protection of the cultural tradition and the agricultural heritage of agave within the iconic mezcal production community of Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. The family employs numerous neighbors and is one of the rare distillers the area who still produce using Ancestral methods, including clay pot stills. Gonzalo and his brothers cultivate their own diverse fields of agave – planting from seed and reforesting the diminishing wild agave populations.

* Mezcalero: Gonzalo Martinez Sernas
* Date: June 2020
* Still Type: Clay
* Bottle: 269/449
* ABV: 47.54%

A wonderful Ancestral expression, my first impressions are very good of this spirit. Sweeter flavors on the nose. Citrus is present but light. Balanced and not offensive.

Many flavors present but the most prominent are fresh roasted corn and slightly sour agave with a sweet blue cotton candy finish. Fruity, crisp and a overall solid and delightful pour.

Minerals from the spring water shine through and as well as the flavor of the clay still, this is probably best served in a copita. A treat to enjoy every rare once in a while during a special event/etc and overall an A- spirit.

Nose – Vanilla. Mandarin orange. Subtle pine wood.

Palate – A bit of an oily feel but nice. Rose petal. Leather. Pine wood burst in the finish. Good stuff. ABV – 48%
