About this destilado de agave

Maguey Melate Barril from Antonio Carlos Martinez was first released as the June 2019 Mezcalero of the Month agave spirit. The maguey Barril (agave Karwinksii) used in this mezcal were wild harvested, taking about 12 years to reach maturity.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Lote 1, ABV 46.7 Grassy on the nose, bit of candied fruit. Tastes of lemongrass upfront and a slight metallic aftertaste. Sharp and stinging. A vague taste in the background of the clay pot. A decent mezcal and would like to sample more from the Mezcalero.

a bit of heat but once again complex and interesting. Faint garlic, some green onion, hint of salinity and earthy minerality. Ultimately very savory.

Overall, this is quite interesting. It’s powerful and complex. It strays into the savory and peppery domains far more than anything sweet or fruity – although there are elements. Very nicely done.

To start, there is definitely an earthy smell with some type of baked good. Has a clay forward taste with an after taste of vanilla.

Earthy, notes of clay without overpowering. Wet cement, some pine forest. There’s a spicy and vegetal flow that finishes for days.

4.25 for me.

N: citrusy to me; grilled peach and slight kiwi. If there’s smoke, it’s very faint.
P: oily and spicy, although it took a while to place the latter expression. Not as much clay funk as Lalocura Tobala, but this expression comes secondary. Minimal detectable smoke.
F: dry and quick with a little residual heat; modest burn in a good way. Well rounded.
S: first Barril ever. Fun combination of citrus and heat, which makes for an enjoyable contrast. With a solid, subtle impression by the clay, this Barril has a lot to offer.

8/1-went back and tried later.

Nose and taste is now full on fruity pebbles. Roasted peanuts on the finish. Very cool!

One of the better MM releases. Pine and sweet memphis bbq. Some stone fruit on back end. Enjoyable AF

Agreed with Rakhal. This is karwinskii perfection. Aromas of baked goods, chocolate dipped strawberries, sugary ice cream, spearmint, and bit of musk. The palate is big and round. Notes of vanilla, dried banana, strawberries, mesquite, and charred wood. Really awesome.

This is a perfect expression of Barril Agave. Earthy and complex. Freshly cut oak tree, baked clay, roasted cacao, old leather, marbled rye, vanilla ice cream. I love this.
