About this destilado de agave

Maguey Melate Coyote from Noé García Olivera was first released as the April 2020 Mezcalero of the Month agave spirit. Noé produces in the community of Sola de Vega, a region known for it’s clay pot distillation. Noé and his family consider themselves farmers first, and mezcaleros second. They only produce about 3–4 batches of mezcal per year.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Sweet at first on the palate – satisfying, viscous mouthfeel. Cream, light soil, some clay, a bit of ash and tree bark, lovely faint fruity component. Plenty going on.

Delightful from start to finish, Noe’s Coyote is an expression that I won’t forget in the near future – or likely at all. This ties in so many flavors I love, with that lovely clay still character without going too overbearing. Total winner.

Great clay balance – soft minerality & and not overbearing on smell or taste. Cream with some good, fruity sweetness to this as well. For almost 50% this is a bit mild. Good clay Coyote here, but by no means great.

Really nice Coyote here. Rich notes of chocolate, slate, orange and lemongrass. Would like to try more from Noe.

Batch: NOE-COY-001

Nose: Herbal, Earthy, Mineraly, rubbery, slight leather hint, buttercream frosting

Palate: Medium mouthfeel. Warm. Herabalness, slight florality, rubbery, campfire smoke, over-ripe banana. Toffee.

Finish: Medium length, saline, floralness, slight earth and guava.

This is a good showing from Noe Garcia. This leans more on the savory side with tons of herbalness and floralness, but with a nice hint of candy sweetness and light fruits. The rubbery note hold it back a bit this is is still a tasty mezcal.

NOE-COY-001. Aromas of sea salt, wet clay, brown sugar, and butterscotch. Delicate palate. Notes of coffee grounds, burnt sugar, freshly ground black peppercorns, and a bit of sandalwood and tobacco. This is soft and balanced. It’s not as slatey as many other Sola de Vega mezcals, allowing more of the agave to come through. Really nice.

Batch Number NOE-COY-001

Smells almost like a band-aid on the first pass. There’s fairly prominent minerality present in the form of wet clay and limestone. Theres a hint of mango, or maybe even lychee! There are sharp green notes present too, which I can only describe as fresh garden herb. On the palate, I’m getting green bell pepper, licorice, some lime zest. The acidity is fairly high-tone. There’s some lactic influence here, too—kind of like mint yoghurt. The nice minty green-ness and clay minerality lasts quite a while and leaves the tongue tingling. It’s hot, but very enjoyable.

This mezcal is incredibly refreshing to drink, and strangely kind of reminds me of thin mints (in a good way). This, like most of what Melate puts out, is packed full of delightful flavors.

Some rubbing alcohol on immediate inspection yields to a balance of citrusy lemon and some licorice. Medium mouthfeel and quite clean. Not a ton of that signature clay pot minerality/funk for me, although it’s there. Leans more sweet. Pretty good finish, little hot, longer than most. Which I enjoy.

Nose is bright green and citrus notes. Palate is sweet and fresh cut flowers. There’s an enjoyable, long finish with just the right heat.

Mezcal Review #3 – Maguey Melate Coyote (April 2020 Club Pick)

Mezcalero: Noe Garcia Olivera

Region: San Juan Bautista, Sola de Vega

Still Type: Clay Pot

Batch: NOE-COY-001

49.1% ABV

Additional Info: The first of a pair of agave Americana family mezcals for Maguey Melate club members in the April – May 2020 pack, this one made from cultivated Coyote agaves. Lots more info about this batch on Maguey Melate’s youtube channel.

Nose: Lime jaritos! Slightly funky, overripe fruits. In a narrow-necked glass mesquite smoke and BBQ meats become apparent.

Taste: Very sweet – powdered sugar and citrus. Becomes more savory with cream cheese frosting, pistachios, pepper, and grilled meat.

Finish: Initially a little smoke and meat, evolving into mint before a loooooong clay note. The clay stays with me all night.

Notes: My first bottle from the club and it’s a winner, this is delicious. Very glad I joined, can’t wait to get into May’s Arroqueno!

Score: 7/10

1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out.

2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume by choice.

3 | Bad | Multiple flaws.

4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but better exists.

5 | Good | Good, just fine.

6 | Very Good | A cut above.

7 | Great | Well above average

8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional.

9 | Incredible | An all time favorite

10 | Perfect | Perfect

One of the awesome things about Maguey Melate is that one month you may get something you dont really dig, but the next month you may get an absolute gem. Well, this is the latter. Opens with rose hips, hibiscus, prickly pear…. mid palate is rock candy. Finish is cooked agave with slight vanilla. Up there with Semei’s Arroqueno and Bertas Mexicano for best of MM thus far. Fun!
