About this destilado de agave

Maguey Melate Marteño from Antonio “Conejo” Carlos Martínez was originally featured as a Mix & Match selection available only on the Melate website. This is made with 9 year old cultivated maguey Marteño (agave Karwinskii). Batch number 1 was just 80 litres total.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Nose: Huge fruit notes, quince, overripe papaya and banana, slightly estery, methinks. Some earthen stink, this is from Minas, a kinda “cheeses and herbs” thing. Sage. Certainly on the more extreme end of profiles. Parmesan, sage, and overripe fruits. Some quality homemade fancy orgeat references, clay, beef fat.

My feet are tappin’ cuz the funk is real! Just when the main palate I think has hit me with the Bop Gun hard enough, dang ol’ Bernie Worrel signs us off on the finish where beef fat, sage, and banana oil ride it out.

Worthwhile experience, not exactly crushable. The balance seems to fascinate me but ultimately I think this is more of a lesson in extremity. Maybe it’s not really that funky, but, idk. Thanks for reading?

Personally, I just think this is an above average agave distillate. Nothing stands out for me. Also, nothing is really off-putting about it. On to the next one

Wet earth, dried fruits and boysenberry jam. Sweet and spicy ribs, black pepper and a touch of citrus, all cloaked in some light musk.
