About this destilado de agave

Maguey Melate Papalometl was produced by maestro mezcalero Jose Erubiel Mota Martinez in Zapotitlan Lagunas, Oaxaca. This Papalometl was released alongside a Papalometl Pechuga, which can be tasted side by side.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Great buttery tart start with a kind of taffy cream finish and a balanced tire rubber

Somewhere between 2 and 3 stars. Nothing remarkable. Will use in cocktails

This is interesting and very powerful as far as taste. The aroma has some dark fruit without being sweet. The taste—WOAH! Musty earth like dirt from under an ancient fern. There is a light sweetness as well. The taste really jumps out fast and strong. The finish is really nice and a bit spicy and maybe even some red-hot candy. While not my cup o’ tea this is an interesting one!

This is funky and sour with enough sweetness to just balance the sourness. Big anise notes of black licorice and fennel fronds, lemon juice, rotting mangoes, cinnamon, and celery. Weird in a good way.

Nose has some apple and a little ‘fruit funkyness’ to it. Follows through to the taste. As Zack mentioned a bit sour, which is slightly off-putting.

Batch: JOS-PAP-001
Nose – Cream soda. Cinnamon. Baked apple slices.

Palate – Very sweet. Candy apple. Black licorice. Aftertaste is a tart and a bit sour (apple cider like). Overall, still pretty solid.
