About this destilado de agave

Maguey Melate Pechuga from Edgar González Ramirez was first released as the December 2019 Mezcalero of the Month agave spirit. Edgar is a first generation mezcal producer, but he comes from a long line of sugarcane aguardiente (rum) producers. This pechuga was a special batch that he produced for Maguey Melate. His other mezcal can be found under the name of Mezcal Tosba.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Nose of overripe bananas, strawberry yogurt and juniper berries, with a touch of astringency. Baking spice, celery citrus and anise on the palate.

Nose: Minerality, Earthy, light faint fruit, apple, light fig. Slight oak spice, anise.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel. Warm. Minerality, slight black peppercorns, red apple, anise, some earth.

Finish: Medium length, minerality, brown sugar, black pepper, very faint apple.

I think this is tasty. It has nice flavors, with some light fruits and spices that are decently balanced. I’m pretty surprised that this is a pechuga as the fruits are very faint for me. If you gave this to me blind I would not have pegged it as an Espadin, but it is still a good and well-made Mezcal.

Took me a while with this one to notice anything else but a decent Espadin but subtle flavors starting coming out. Menthol, basil, vanilla, sandalwood, strawberry shisha tobacco, cacao, and clove.

Not getting anything other than a decently made espadin. If you would have blindfolded me, I would have guessed the same. Ok
