About this destilado de agave

Maguey Melate Pelón Verde from Sergio Martinez Rodriguez was originally released as the December 2022 Mezcalero of the Month Club agave spirit. This mezcal was produced in the remote community of Santa Maria Ecatepec, Oaxaca, which is about a 5.5 hour drive from Oaxaca Centro. About 8 years ago, Sergio started planting his own Pelon Verde agaves recognizing the flavor profile and biology were drastically different from Espadin.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Okay mine is from Roman Sosa and December 2021, which doesn’t have a listing (please fix this).

Nose is of spring onions and grape seed, and new car smell.
Palate is smooth, deep grape and cracked peppercorns. Laffy taffy, river rocks and silt.

Dessert Mezcal. Super vanilla, after dinner mint, gummy oranges, marshmallow. After a few not at all sweet bottles earlier tonight, this one was a surprise!

Very round with more general sweeter notes. An all day sipper for sure! I also get the black licorice notes others have mentioned, along with some altoids mintiness. I don’t normally like the lower ABVs, but even at 46.5% this one feels more like a low 42% or so. Really good!

Exceptionally balanced and drinkable! The aroma is good, clean with floral, minerality, river rocks, a hint of clay and light citrus.
The taste is solid with more minerals, mild bitterness, almost no smoke nor sweetness and good heat.
The finish is balanced, very long, great! Way to end 2022 Maguey Melate!

Lot SER-PEL-002. Aromas of peppermint, black licorice, menthol, spearmint, and vanilla. The palate mostly matches the nose, with notes of fresh peppermint, black licorice, light smoke, rosemary, and Vick’s VapoRub. This is really bright and fresh, light on the palate.

Aroma: new car smell and brand new shoes, some tire rubber in there as well
Taste: Very minty – peppermint chocolate icecream. Hint of herbs in the finish.
Overall: I wasn’t expecting much from the aroma, but I like taste and the honey lavender finish.
Score: 8.5/10

Update: I’m getting a ton of black licorice off of this now. Good call Jonny!

This is a beautiful expression. Peppermint Altoids, vanilla ice cream, tarragon, thyme, lavender, and sugar snap peas. The mouth feel is thin but the flavors are right on! I dig it.
