About this destilado de agave

Maguey Melate Tepextate / Cuixe from Flavio Cesar Rodriguez Rodriguez was originally released as the August 2021 Mezcalero of the Month Club agave spirit. Flavio produced this spirit in the community of San Pedro Taviche, Occotlan using 50% Tepextate and 50% Cuixe.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Honestly can’t remember when or why I bought this 375ml bottle. It is definitely an interesting combo of agaves. However, I don’t dig it that much. The notes are a bit sour and rancid like old wet leaves. A few reviewers have noted “paint” which is definitely accurate.. like the smell of a freshly opened paint can. I’m not super opposed to it but also not keen on it. I’ll keep it around to share with friends – still an interesting ensamble. FLA-ENS-001 batch.

This one definitely improved after it had been open awhile. Chocolate-y and smoky with flavors of brown M&M’s, fresh banana, cigarette butts, river rocks, wood varnish, cedar, and mint chip ice cream.

Bit on the lighter side for my preference, but I love that the Tep. notes shine through. Get some watermelon along with the more classic tepeztate notes. All around very enjoyable, and this particular bottle got better with some air time! 3.75 stars.

Batch: FLA-ENS-001
Nose – Brand new rubber basketball. Paint primer. Baby carrots. Watermelon water.

Palate – Weak floral flavors / watery even for 44% ABV. Flower stems and roots. Rubber. Cigarette smoke. This one ain’t for me.

Maguey Melate has been on a tear recently! Earthy peach cobbler. Lemons. Mulch. Prickly pear. Ambrosia!
