Maguey Melate Tepextate from Marta and Isaac García was first released as part of the Maguey Melate Signature Box. The maguey Tepextate (agave Marmorata) used in this mezcal take approximately 20 years to reach maturity in San Lorenzo Albarradas, Oaxaca.

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.
They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. 21 reviewsOne of the most pleasant noses I’ve ever smelt. A balanced rich sweet smoke that is just delightful.
Definitely a bit thin on the palate, without the punch you might expect. The end result is really a pleasant sipping mezcal you probably will finish too fast.

165 reviewsNose and flavor seem very light for a Tep which usually announce themselves straight away. Not displeasing though, still some mint, earth, and spice come through. I get a root vegetable flavor like a yam or sweet potato. Alongside Gregorio Garcia’s Tep, there is more sweetness, fewer vegetal notes, more floral aromas.

Palate: More centered on roasted peppers, a sweet floral and fruity entry going into that pepper body with ample lime juice without being too acidic, a little minerality / perhaps salt as well. The finish is a touch ashy and diffuse, but with good length. Sadly though, the flavors that linger aren’t nearly as pleasant as the entry and main body.
Thoughts: If the smoke was a little more controlled and the finish better, this could easily go down as an all time favorite tep.

144 reviewsBright on the palate – quite complex. First taste brings bell pepper, string bean, jalapeno. The longer it rests, the sweeter and more mineral forward it becomes, ending with leek, ash and a touch of crispness.
This is an excellent look at a Tep that goes all out in “green” field notes on the palate but brings balance and complexity to the finish, without going too overboard. A masterpiece from Marta and Isaac.
