Mal Bien Papalote from Don Tomás and his son Emiliano Gutiérrez was produced in the community of Chilapa de Alvarez, Guerrero. Don Tomás and his son Emiliano are third and fourth generation mezcaleros in the hills above Chilapa de Alvarez. Like many of their peers, the Gutiérrez family points to the quality their maguey as the determining factor in the quality of their destilados. To ensure that continues, the family has invested in a nursery program that currently includes 50,000+ papalote seedlings in their care.
Mal Bien
Since 2016, the Mal Bien team has been traveling Mexico, driving off the map and into mountains filled with treacherous roads, police officers of questionable moral character, feral dogs, indigenous languages, narcos, ancient relics, machete wielding protestors, insect based meals, mudslides, blockades, corrupt politicians, and many of the world’s kindest, funniest, most brilliant people. In addition to some hard to believe stories, they’ve connected with a wide variety of traditional producers, whose mezcal is now bottled and exported under the Mal Bien name.

When my nose works, I get chalky dark chocolate and hardwood.
Palate: dominant 70% dark cocoa while sanding hardwood. Some ash turning to a creamy mouthfeel. Current favorite for Dec2022. Besides the normal agave and black pepper notes mentioned above. Fresh crack all notes were muted. This bottle only took 3 days to open up and continues to taste delicious.

Palate – Birthday cake icing. Amazing smoke profile – it has a tasty, slight sourness to it and balanced well from start to finish. I only had an ounce sample and it was complex enough for me to miss likely a lot of quality notes it seemed. I would definitely seek out more and try to drill deeper.

421 reviewsI got a ton of different flavors from this one. It is very green, reminds me of wet green vegetation, spearmint, green bell peppers, clovers, desert flowers. There is also a sweetness to it that really reminds me of candy corns, vanilla frosting, and orange soda. Some leather too. I only had about an ounce and I tried it next to the other black label Mal Biens which are so good that it probably made me rate it lower than I would have otherwise. It’s a solid Mezcal.
