Mal Bien Quiote de Alto was produced by Don Isidro Rodriguez Montoya in Rio de Parras, Michoacán. Don Isidro’s used only the quiote of the agave for this special batch, which was released exclusively through Tahona Mercado. Don Isidro is a first generation Mezcalero. After sharing the communal vinata for 14 years, he built his own vinata in 2015, where he currently distills all his agave.
Mal Bien
Since 2016, the Mal Bien team has been traveling Mexico, driving off the map and into mountains filled with treacherous roads, police officers of questionable moral character, feral dogs, indigenous languages, narcos, ancient relics, machete wielding protestors, insect based meals, mudslides, blockades, corrupt politicians, and many of the world’s kindest, funniest, most brilliant people. In addition to some hard to believe stories, they’ve connected with a wide variety of traditional producers, whose mezcal is now bottled and exported under the Mal Bien name.

Nose – A fresh cucumber and lime spritz on a hot summer day.
Palate – instantly coats the entire mouth, then there is a tiny bit of heat n the sides of the tongue. Very warming effect, but not HOT.
Flavors – More watermelon and citrus zest candy than cucumber. The more I try it, the more Meyer lemon comes out. Some slight yeast/toast in there…. This might be a perfect mezcal for me. It’s balanced, big, complex, and incredibly drinkable.

Warming with a prickle initial nasal impact, then slightly drying.
Aroma hits with watermelon all day. Orange blossom, cucumber, taffy, jolly rancher watermelon. This is a very fine nose.
Warming, coating and soft mouthfeel. There is a generous alcohol presence on the tongue. Sweet, followed by some sour and bitter with medium body on initial swirl in the mouth. Somewhat cooling, then heat working together in a pleasing way.
Flavor profile starts big with watermelon taffy, melon, cucumber, jalapeno, honey and citrus zest. Awesome limestone and mineral on the retro nasal. Concentrated and complex with dry, fresh extinguished ash on the medium finish. Harmoniously balanced. Overall impression is excellent. A MUST have.

Palate – Smarties Halloween candy. Woody. Parm cheese. Dry and fruity in the finish – like a champagne and lemonade mimosa. Quality tobacco aftertaste and some bitterness. A fantastic warmth to this. Isidro is a master!

It has those Michoacán vibes. It doesn’t automatically stand out as something not made 100% from agave piñas. The first note that stands out is strawberry shortcake on the front. There is a bit of pop mid-late palate with notes of firewood and peat. Underneath it all are some complex vegetal notes like fresh cucumber and arugula (pepper flavors). I might revisit and add more thoughts later. I dig this one. Not sure of the batch but it was the first release in 2021.

228 reviewsI love the nose on this, so fresh and so clean, notes of candied limes and strawberries. Jonny’s notes are spot on, subtle lactic quality very fruit forward. I get cherry starbursts on this. You won’t be disappointed if you have a pour or two.

705 reviewsSweet aromas of red Starbursts, watermelon, grapefruit, cherries, clementine, and a bit of soft cheese. The lactose on the nose is very subtle as it’s mostly fruit forward aromas. The palate mostly matches the nose in terms of tasting notes: fruit forward with tropic fruits meeting slight lactic elements and a bit of grilled char flavoring. Really nice balance.
