Mal de Amor Tobala / Cuishe

Mal de Amor Tobala / Cuishe is produced in a beautiful palenque that is owned and operated by Armando Hernandez and his brother Alvaro.

About this mezcal

Mal de Amor Tobala / Cuishe is produced by Maestro Mezcalero Armando Hernandez and his brother Alvaro in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. Armando and Alvaro are 3rd generation Maestro Mezcaleros. They grew up making mezcal with their father, learning the techniques handed down from their grandfather. They double distill all their mezcal in 250 liter copper pot stills.

Mal de Amor Mezcal

Mal de Amor Mezcal is a Zapotec-family-owned brand from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. The palenque is just off the main paved road on the outskirts of town, and it features a full restaurant, a robust barrel aging program, and a small bottling and labelling room. The agave used for production at Mal de Amor come from a variety of different lands in Oaxaca which allows for a rich diversity in expressions to include different terroir. Portions of the family owned land is used to maintain the sustainability of agave for future generations.

We visited this palenque a few years ago and wrote about it in our blog post A Tour with Oaxacking: Mezcal Ilegal, Convite, Pulque, and More.

Nose – Pine sap. Flower water left in a vase.

Palate – Sprite soda. Hot and a tad rough for 45%. Floral and grassy finish but more bitter than sweet. Dry, pine wood aftertaste. Not really picking up much of the Tobala, the Karwinski reigns in this ensamble.

Another winner from Mal de Amor. Thick, simple-syrup like mouthfeel. Lemon heads at first blush. More lemon as it goes down, including some pine and a little rauchbier on the finish. Diggin it
