About this mezcal

Mala Idea Espadin Capon is made with agave Espadin that has taken 10-12 years to mature. They use the word “capon” on the label of this Espadin to signify that the Espadin used for this mezcal was purposefully left in the ground for longer than others. This mezcal has scents of fresh lemon, grass seeds, and subtle smoked. This mezcal tastes of citrus and is dry in the mouth. Mala Idea Espadin Capon won the 2017 Double Gold Medal at the Las Vegas Global Spirit Awards.

Mala Idea Mezcal

Mala Idea, which translates to “Bad Idea” is named in celebration of everyone who follows their passions regardless of the risks and challenges they present. From semi-cultivated/wild Espadin to the truly wild agaves such as Tobala, Cuishe, and Tepextate, Mala Idea Mezcal is handcrafted to ensure the absolute best quality. All their agave is cooked in a stone horno, fermented in open-air, crushed by tahona, and distilled in copper stills.

The worst Espadin I’ve ever had! Too sweet and harsh at the same time. Over priced for the quality. Don’t waste your money on this bottle.

Bottle says made from 12 year old agaves. I’ve enjoyed this bottle because good value as a sipper and mixer. It’s sweet with some cherry candy and vanilla jellybean notes. There is a hint of orange sorbet. For me it has a bit more depth and long sweet finish than you might find in other agave Espadin mezcals in the same price range.

I tasted this Espadin in Vegas and I was very surprised on how balanced it was. Citrus forward and notes of cooked agave. Candied Orange peel. Definitely better than Vida (petrol), Fidencio ( Bitter) and other Espadins. I also tasted their Ensamble and Cuishe and both were excellent. I like that they state the age of their agaves.

Alcohol is very pronounced. A little sweetness on the finish, but not much other flavor.

Lot 001…Sweet agave aroma and flavor…Lots of cooked agave on this and incredibly sweet like sugarcane…or just confectionery sugar, not like candy…A bit thin in the mouth…slight hints of carrots and sweet potato…sweet root vegetables…everything about this is incredibly sweet.

Compared to other espadins for the same price, I can not recommend this one. It has a bit of sweetness, but it’s very harsh. It may be better as a mixer.
