About this mezcal

Matasanta Espadin is produced by maestro mezcalero Moisés Pacheco, a 3rd generation mezcalero in the community of La Pila in Miahuatlán, Oaxaca. His family always worked in mezcal, helping with production for other mezcaleros. Originally, Moisés did not want to continue with his family’s mezcal tradition, and he took up a job in construction. However after some time, he decided to build his own palenque, where he now produces his own mezcal.

Matasanta Mezcal

MATASANTA’s mission, as part of The Palm Project , is to support initiatives for conservation of endangered species along Oaxaca’s mesmerizing coast. The main vision of the Palm Project is to create a sustainable and holistic way to experience travel and a model of how tourism can help rebuild ecosystems and communities. The brand works with various small batch producers in different communities, and all proceeds from the MATASANTA mezcal brand go back to biodiversity conservation initiatives.

Batch EP0123. This is a phenomenal Espadin! It has aromas of lemon and pine, mixing with a chalky mineral element. The palate has some similarities to the Ortiz and Valente Garcia families that also produce in this small region of Miahuatlán. Notes of serrano peppers, fresh flowers, dryer sheets, chalky minerals, and this very sweet sugary bubblegum-like undertone. This is really nice and one that I’ll continue to reach for. A great session mezcal.
