About this mezcal

Mezcal Metiche is produced by mezcalero Juan Manuel Pérez Juárez in Charcas, a town and municipality in the state of San Luis Potosí in central Mexico. Charcas is at an elevation of 6,627 feet. The agave Salmiana used in this mezcal grows for about 13 years on the high plateaus of San Luis Potosí. The soil, weather and excess rain, as well as the intensity of the sun in this region give the agave Salmiana and this mezcal unique and memorable flavors. Using productions methods that haven’t changed since 1870, the agaves are cooked in stone ovens. The resulting spirit is soft, not smoked.

This is a nice change of pace compared to your standard Espadin mezcals in the same price range. The previous tasting notes that mentioned “jalapeño simple syrup” are pretty spot on but for me there is a nice balance of sweet and spicy. It’s a bit thin (watery) and definitely not viscous like syrup. If you’re deep into a mezcal tasting the flavors might seem muted but as a first mezcal of the day this is packed with organic peppers and agave notes. Good value as well. It is to the Derrumbes SLP release (from memory) but flavors here are a bit simpler.

If I could buy this locally I would.. as a way to introduce newbies to mezcal flavor diversity. Sipped at Sky Reef in Cozumel. Lot 290119

Nose – Huge blast of chopped jalapeño peppers.

Palate – Very weak and watery to start. Then the heat starts to build but it doesn’t come together much. I liken this to making jalapeño simple syrup (for spicy palomas cocktails) but way short on sugar and heavy on the jalapeño flesh.
