About this destilado de agave

Mezcalosfera Bicuixe from Don Margarito was produced by maestro mezcalero Margarito Cortés in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. Margarito cooks his agave with mezquite and encino wood in an underground pit oven. The cooked agave are milled by tahona, fermented with wild yeasts, and double distilled in a copper refrescadera still.

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City. Most of their spirits are labeled “Aguardiente de Agave”, however all of their limited exports are certified “Mezcal”. These mezcals are imported into the United States by Heavy Metl Premium Imports, which also imports popular brands Mezcal Real Minero and Rey Campero Mezcal.

Starts off a bit hot but once you ease in this has some nice sugar and minerality. Bicuixe makes a fun mezcal that can lean too dry but this one has enough sweetness to balance things out. There is a some notes of cotton candy and Lemonheads. Lote 07USA-19. 4 stars.

Sipping this again in April 2022 – amazing. Nice clean fruity notes and a perfect balance of minerals and agave. Updated to 4.5 stars

Really well balanced bicuixe. I liken this to Margarito’s neighbor, Don Valente’s mezcalero #22. Minty and creamy. Love the long finish on this one.
