About this mezcal

Mezcalosfera Espadin/Jabali is produced by mezcalero Victor Ramos in Miahuatlán, Oaxaca. In December 2017, the agaves were cooked together in an underground over, crushed with stone, and naturally fermented for 6 days. Next, it was distilled twice in a copper refrescador still and adjusted to a final ABV of 47.71% using puntas and shishe. The final batch size was 582 liters.

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City. Most of their spirits are labeled “Aguardiente de Agave”, however all of their limited exports are certified “Mezcal”. These mezcals are imported into the United States by Heavy Metl Premium Imports, which also imports popular brands Mezcal Real Minero and Rey Campero Mezcal.

An excellent combination of agave put together. The espadin gives a really full bodied complement to the spicy jabalí. Aromas of tanned leather, tarragon, vanilla, black cherries and baking spice, meat seared in teriyaki. In the mouth it first strikes with rich agave and butterscotch notes, then cloves, caraway, tarragon, mango and muscovado sugar. Rich mouthfeel, integrated alcohol. There are also some great umami/meaty notes from the jabalí that keep lingering.

We have a bottle from Mezcaloteca in Oaxaca City purchased in March, 2017, an earlier bottling and distillation. Date May 2016. 250 liters produced. Lot #01-16. Cardamom on the nose, Great taste and lingering finish. Touches of herbal notes, clay, mango, and spice. So well balanced and approachable. Cannot single out what the Jabali brings to the ensemble, but fantastic mezcal.

Lot 12-17. Freshly cut roses, caramel candy, clove, cinnamon, long spice-filled finish. Mmmm…

Aromas of fresh red and pink flowers, cinnamon candy canes, coconut, rose pedals, and perfume. The palate is 100% cinnamon Altoids. For those that don’t eat cinnamon Altoids, you’ll probably taste Red Hots candies on this, which are similar, but cinnamon Altoids are an overwhelming note in this and definitely closer in describing this taste. Fortunately, I love cinnamon Altoids and often eat them in traffic as a stress reliever when driving home from work. So this is all positive for me. It’s a strong single sweet note of sugar and cinnamon, but I enjoy it.

Definitely taste the espadin base. If it were $30 less a bottle, it might be my go to mezcal. Enjoyable

A somewhat mild flavor profile that is vegetal, spicy, floral, and bright. It has some of the wild flavors often found in Jabali but balanced out with the Espadin. I will say that this is my least favorite of the Mezcalosfera releases so far, though it is still a very good mezcal and is at a lower price point than their other offerings. 3.5 stars

Another great mezcalosfera release. Nose was very earthy and vegetal. Pepper and grass on the first taste with a light rosey floralness. Finish doesn’t last long but definitely lots of minerality followed by grapefruit! Very clean flavor. I tasted it alongside Rey Campero’s jabali, and it’s tamer, more balanced which I credit the espadin.

Edit 3/2018 – did a tasting with a couple of friends who are new to mezcal. This bottle won the night against a few other mezcalosfera bottles, RC and Jolgorio.
