About this mezcal

Mezcalosfera Madrecuixe/Bicuixe/Tobaxiche/Tepextate was made by Emanuel Ramos in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca in April 2016. It was made with 30% maguey Madrecuixe, 20% maguey Bicuixe, 25% maguey Tobaxiche, and 25% maguey Tepextate. The agave was cooked with mesquite and encino wood, and then fermented for 7 days. It was double distilled in a cobre con refrescadera still, and it is adjusted with the puntas and agua de mtal. The entire batch (01-16) was 397 liters.

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City. Most of their spirits are labeled “Aguardiente de Agave”, however all of their limited exports are certified “Mezcal”. These mezcals are imported into the United States by Heavy Metl Premium Imports, which also imports popular brands Mezcal Real Minero and Rey Campero Mezcal.

Just picked this one up– I feel like I’ve got a glass bottle aged version since I bought it new nearly 8 years after production haha just absolutely incredible stuff here. I’m a huge karwinskii stan so I’m a bit biased but this one makes me feel like I’m in Oaxaca. Initial nose of the bottle was bananas, vegetal and herbs but the first pour was incredibly smooth and full of that greenness that you’d expect with it being primarily karwinskii. I get more of the karwinskii at first with a slightly herbal tepe finish, some vanilla notes in there, too. Damn this is good.

Not sure what to think. Punches you in the face with herbs and pepper, then maybe some slight plastic/rubber followed by graham crackers and smoke and a rock candy finish.

Interesting? Yes. Strange? Yes. For me? Not my jam

Awesome juice as expected. Elegant yet explosive. Notes of charred lime, green peppers, spiced vanilla, and s’mores. There is a lot of good things going on here and it is worth a taste.

Mildly herbaceous nose, somewhat green resinous initial taste, cinnamon, hot spiciness/alcohol burn, roasted agave finish, sometimes sawdust too. Its aftertaste is not much of a highlight for me.

Full, rich aromas that are slightly perfumed. Tasting notes of green pepper and a bit of spice. The Tepextate seems very defined in this, with notes that clearly standout from the other Karwinskii agave. I get a similar saltiness in this that I’ve found in the previous Mezcalosfera releases from Miahuatlan.
