About this destilado de agave

Mezcalosfera Madrecuixe from Don Job is produced by mezcalero Job Cortés, who is the son of mezcalero Margarito Cortés. This mezcal is made with maguey Madrecuixe (agave Karwinskii) in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. The agave were milled by hand with mallets and double distilled in a copper refrescadera still.

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City. Most of their spirits are labeled “Aguardiente de Agave”, however all of their limited exports are certified “Mezcal”. These mezcals are imported into the United States by Heavy Metl Premium Imports, which also imports popular brands Mezcal Real Minero and Rey Campero Mezcal.

Lot 04USA
This is a solid bottle, but not what I typically like out of Madres. On the nose you can smell the herbal/minerality almost right away, but a lot of smokey woody tobacco notes also. Taste wise a smoke bomb upfront eventually ceding to the limestone, water on rocks mineral taste. Definitely on the dry side, overall the balance is off.

This is a big mineral bomb in a good way. Lots of stone, salt, and dry vanilla bean. There is a slight sour apple note on the finish. Not quite the complexity I find in certain Mezcalosfera releases but still really good; price is decent as well. Don’t think I’ve had many mezcales from Don Job. August 2018 batch. FWIW, I prefer the Mezcalosfera Madrecuixe from Margarito a bit more than this.

Lot 04USA-19. It takes tremendous will power and discipline to drink this slowly. Nose: vanilla, green apples, mesquite, smoke. On the pallet the smoke is up front, but minerality quickly takes over and stays throughout, followed by peppers and a long sweet finish. Very, very enjoyable.
