As of November 2022, Don Beni was 86 years old. He is truly a master distiller.
Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca
Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City. Most of their spirits are labeled “Aguardiente de Agave”, however all of their limited exports are certified “Mezcal”. These mezcals are imported into the United States by Heavy Metl Premium Imports, which also imports popular brands Mezcal Real Minero and Rey Campero Mezcal.

107 reviewsNose: rotten melon, overnight oats, coconut cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, petrichor
Palate: syrupy caramel on the front end, tangy vanilla, cantaloupe, candied limes. Finish is honey jalapenos and minerality.
This is layered complex and beautiful. Just unreal good. The mouthfeel is great and no type of note dominates. Let so well put together.
Update: Tried this next to the Melate Benigno and they are definitely different. Melate is all fruit and tangy. This has more layers, spice and minerality. Both are fantastic

700 reviews01PAPUSA-21. Absolutely beautiful mezcal that I’ve been trying to wrap my head around for some time. Aromas of toasted oats, caramel, honey, and molasses. cloves, fresh ginger, and almonds. The palate is so delicate and soft. Notes of figs, dried hay, tobacco, cinnamon, hazelnut, coca leaves, brown sugar, butterscotch. This is really a fantastically distilled mezcal.

This has such a beautiful, soft mouth feel! The flavors are so well integrated! It almost tastes like it’s been rested in glass for a long time. Every Mezcal I’ve ever had from Benigno has the same qualities. The flavors to me are like dried thyme, barbecued pineapple, and warm baking spices like allspice and cloves and cinnamon. This is fantastic! Everything this guy distills is beautiful.
