Nacional 1938

Mezcal Nacional 1938 recalls the events of 1938, a time of great hardships, but also a time that demonstrated a great desire for self-determination of the Mexican people.

About this mezcal

Nacional 1938 is made with maguey Espadin and maguey Cirial in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. Maestro Mezcalero Celso Martinez Lopez uses traditional mezcal production methods and double-distills this mezcal in a small copper still. Nacional 1938 commemorates the expropriation of Mexican oil reserves in 1938. In 1938, the Mexican government declared oil reserves within Mexico belonged to the nation. Nationalization, however, came at a heavy price as it precipitated an international boycott of Mexico. The boycott caused great economic strain to a country already in the midst of a worldwide economic depression.

This spirit was awarded Best Mezcal at the 2018 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Nacional Mezcal

Mezcal Nacional is produced utilizing strictly traditional methods, which include baking agave piñas in traditional stone ovens, fermentation in open air wooden vats, and double distillation in copper stills, all under the careful direction of Maestro Mezcalero Celso. Mezcal Nacional is keenly aware that their ability to continue to provide mezcal is inextricably linked to the sustainability of the agave itself. In order to ensure the ability to continue to produce premium quality mezcales from the best agaves, they have begun planting wild agave as part of their reforestation efforts.

Nose is super green – celery and pepper – with notes of anise. The palate is a bit sharp and hot with a high roast. Nice heat rides through the finish,

Citrus note really shine through in this one, which makes it refreshing. My first experience with Cirial. Overall, nothing really standout. Solid for sure, but no big wow factor. Light smoke and no bite- likely due to the 42% ABV.
