NETA Madrecuixe from Paula Aquino Sánchez was released as part of Agave Mixtape volume 7. Paula is a member of the fourth generation of the two founding mezcal producing families of Logoche, Oaxaca; she has a deep understanding of the craft from farming to distillation. Many of their productions made in Logoche are made collectively between the family, but Paula also has her own land with her own agave. She makes and sells select batches independently.
The 160 liter batch featured in Agave Mixtape volume 7 of 100% Maguey Madrecuixe is a reflection of Paula’s skill and expertise as a true master distiller. Paula and her husband Hermogenes’ palenque is shared with four other families. For the Agave Mixtape batch, Paula helped out her compadre, Chepe, and purchased upwards of 1,200kg of Madrecuixe that he had cooked in their horno in October 2020. Chepe harvested the mix of guía and quiotudo agaves of vastly different sizes from distinct parcels of land, blending flavors from red, black, and red soil types.

NETA
NETA is a colloquial word in Mexico that translates to “the real deal” or “the truth”. Since 2012, the brand has worked closely with several small, family producers and a cooperative of twelve palenqueros from the southern valleys and hills of Miahuatlán, Oaxaca. The region has preserved its reputation for producing some of the finest mezcales and agave spirits anywhere in Mexico. The team behind NETA presents a carefully curated selection of extraordinary spirits that would otherwise never be found outside of its place of origin.
A note about NETA labels: The total bottle count written on the front label might be less than the total batch size. Batches may be split between Mexico, Europe, and the US; the handwritten bottle count represents the number of bottles imported into a particular country.

705 reviewsAromas of dryer sheets, cardboard, particleboard, and stewed tomatoes. The palate has more notes of stewed vegetables, raw honey, rotting wood, dried figs, and raisins. Given this is a karwinskii from this region, the overall character of this is surprising. It’s complex but not my favorite. That said, I could see why others might like this more. Lot MDXPLA2011

641 reviewsReminds me of her Bicuixe with the mint flavors. The Karwinskii dry wood aspect has a bit of a sour note mid-palate. There are some fun vegetable notes in there like zucchini skin. I enjoy this but in certain ways it seems the agave flavors are a bit muted. I’ll reiterate my Bicuixe review in saying that I think she’d make a killer Espadin! This is a very graceful distillate nonetheless but I think the higher sugar content of Espadin might be a good match for her craft. The other reviewers are correct about the flavor dissipating rather quickly. Agave Mixtape vol. 07 batch.
