About this destilado de agave

NETA Tepextate was distilled by maestro mezcalero Hermógenes Vásquez in May 2018 and yielded 200 liters. Maguey Tepextate is a type of Agave marmorata that grows throughout many different regions of Oaxaca. This plant is one of the lowest-yielding varietals used in the production of mezcal. In Miahuatlán, maguey Tepextate is sometimes found at lower elevations and can be found growing alongside aromatic herbs and plants, such as verbena, copal trees, and wild chiles.

NETA

NETA is a colloquial word in Mexico that translates to “the real deal” or “the truth”. Since 2012, the brand has worked closely with several small, family producers and a cooperative of twelve palenqueros from the southern valleys and hills of Miahuatlán, Oaxaca. The region has preserved its reputation for producing some of the finest mezcales and agave spirits anywhere in Mexico. The team behind NETA presents a carefully curated selection of extraordinary spirits that would otherwise never be found outside of its place of origin.

A note about NETA labels: The total bottle count written on the front label might be less than the total batch size. Batches may be split between Mexico, Europe, and the US; the handwritten bottle count represents the number of bottles imported into a particular country.

Nose – Nice balance of green pepper, icing sugar, grated parmesan and olive oil.

Palate – A massive blast of vanilla icing. Canned pear juice. There are some good green/vegetal and floral notes but the sugar/sweetness component overpower them. Peppermint heat and tobacco finish. Cigarette smoke flavor in the aftertaste (not rough, but not smooth either). This is pretty good – but overly sweet for me (for a tepeztate).

Not sure what mezcalphd was drinking but it wasn’t this.. This stuff is the absolute nuts.
The best Tepeztate I’ve ever tried and maybe the best mezcal I own right now.
Nose is intoxicating – so fresh and green with mint, lavender, mineral and floral notes.
On the palate, flavours bounce around all over the place – pear, mint gum, cinnamon, earth, chalk. For something so deep, it’s amazing how light and silky it is.
Just can’t stop drinking it and I’m not sure how you could improve on it.

I was psyched to try this brand so I started with this Tep. I respect what they are doing with these destilados and trying to bring what otherwise would have to be adjusted to meet the CRM “Mezcal” standards. But this one just does not work for me. I love the nose – super herbal and promising. But on the palate it is bracing. A bit bitter and soapy and just not very pleasant to drink. I suspect I will enjoy some of their other offerings more….
