Nuestra Soledad San Baltazar

Nuestra Soledad San Baltazar is a rich and full Mezcal that stays long on the palate. The agave Espadin that is used to make it grows at about 5,500 feet.

About this mezcal

Nuestra Soledad San Baltazar is made with agave Espadin that is cultivated in the highlands, where strains of Espadin have been grown for over 100 years.  Don Gregoio’s Espadin grows at about 5,500 feet in limestone-heavy soil.  The concentration of sugars in his agave result in a refined Espadin with great character.  This is a rich and full Mezcal that stays long on the palate.

Nuestra Soledad Mezcal

Traditionally, mezcals from different villages have their own distinctive flavors and aromas, which reflect the differences between distilleries, the soil, the local water sources, the wood used, and of course, the nuances created by the hand of the Maestro Mezcalero.  Mezcal Nuestra Soledad is a single village Mezcal that showcases the differences between the villages of Santiago Matatlán, La Compañía Ejutla, San Luis del Rio, and San Baltazar Guelavila. Mezcal Nuestra Soledad (a name which pays homage to Our Lady the Virgin of Solitude, the patron saint of the city of Oaxaca) is born from an ancient tradition and hand-crafted to conserve and retain the centuries-old methods of cultivating and producing this Elixir of the Gods. Each different expression is made from 100% agave Espadín, by the producers of El Jolgorio mezcals, in Oaxaca, Mexico. Check the batch on your bottle, as the ABV may vary slightly.

2020, Ed 38. GMGES200820NS. It was ok. Mineral, long linger in the final taste, but a sharp note when first tasting that lands funny on first sip. Fine mezcal 2-3 copitas into the night, not great to start.

Edition 26, 2019. Nice Espadin from Don Goyo with big notes of sandalwood, bubble gum, mango, pineapple, and vanilla. At $45 a bottle this is a steal!

Opening a box of pink nerds, a little purple too. Candy necklaces, that kind of thing.

Slightly grippy texture, acidic, a little funky. I wonder if this saw a longer fermentation. The candy is big on the midpalate, some Laffy Taffy coming into the finish. A touch hot, but characterful.

A bit hot, thin, but fantastic and characterful. Waffled on raising it to a 7.

Just tried the 2020 batch after it was recommended to me and its even better but this is for the 2019 (only batch I could find in the US). Rock solid Espadin with all its sugary goodness and a lingering profile that stays on your tongue. Nothing light/thin about this juice as it finishes with a nice hit of baking spice. Nothing out of this world but at $50 its a definite winner. Don Goyo has a Coyote and Cuishe that are out of this world – hope they make it up to the US soon!

Edition 24 from 2018

Wet stones and fruit on the nose. On the palate cooked agave, blueberry, and black pepper. Some cinnamon on a fairly short finish. Liked this more than I expected.

Sweet and loaded with blueberry. It’s like a blueberry toaster strudel. It’s weird but sweet, fruity, and loaded with graham cracker crust and pepper. Clay comes through a bit, alongside some minerality. Clean and crisp on the back palate.

Nose: Strong Red Berries, Vanilla frosting, Blueberries, Mesquite, slight spicy

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, strong mesquite, Strong Red berries, Black Peppers, vanilla frosting, tangy,

Finish: Medium finish, peppery, spicy. Mesquite, strawberry, vanilla frosting

This is a nice offering. Packed full of good strong flavors that complement each other well, it never strays too far into overly sweet or overly savory.

Okay, but very peppery with a strong alcohol base. Clean and dry.

Edition 09 by Gregorio Martinez Garcia. Looking to pick up one of the bottles by Nuestra Soledad when I’m San Diego. Delicious bottle for the price. Really should have tried their options side by sidebar but had to catch a flight.

Don’t see the San Baltazar Guel edition of Nuestra Soledad as often as the others. For me it is somewhere in the middle of the pack relative to the other Nuestra Soledad releases. I’ve never really been blow away with any mezcal from this region (the El Jolgorio Tepextate is an exception). This has a nice oily mouthfeel and notes of apple cider vinegar, fruit, lavender, and allspice. Definitely enjoyable but not very memorable. Edition 6 from 2015.

Edition 06 from 2015. Bottle 293/420. Very clean on the nose with slight hints of vanilla and lavender. It’s thick on the palate and a bit hot with a short finish. It has notes of orange peel and lemon. I like this one, but I prefer some of the other releases from Nuestra Soledad.

Solid Espadin with the usual smoke and earthiness you’d expect, with the addition of cinnamon overtones – first time I experienced that in a joven Mezcal.
