About this mezcal

Nuestra Soledad Mezcal

Traditionally, mezcals from different villages have their own distinctive flavors and aromas, which reflect the differences between distilleries, the soil, the local water sources, the wood used, and of course, the nuances created by the hand of the Maestro Mezcalero.  Mezcal Nuestra Soledad is a single village Mezcal that showcases the differences between the villages of Santiago Matatlán, La Compañía Ejutla, San Luis del Rio, and San Baltazar Guelavila. Mezcal Nuestra Soledad (a name which pays homage to Our Lady the Virgin of Solitude, the patron saint of the city of Oaxaca) is born from an ancient tradition and hand-crafted to conserve and retain the centuries-old methods of cultivating and producing this Elixir of the Gods. Each different expression is made from 100% agave Espadín, by the producers of El Jolgorio mezcals, in Oaxaca, Mexico. Check the batch on your bottle, as the ABV may vary slightly.

Ashen smoke, anise and aloe, peppery. Charred Serrano, dark chocolate and very earthy. Minerality. Light sourdough. Sweet pear and apple. Lots of smoke and fair amount of booze on the exhale.

Clean citrus notes and a sweet nose. Spicy, loads of peppercorn with a bit of a brief finish.

Soil, marble pound cake, a touch of dreamsicle. Classic (but quality) Matatlan.

Viscous, full bodied entry. A little vague, the smoke is a touch dominant and hot. Finish shows more of the agave sweetness from the nose. Really really creamy.

The texture is just WILD.

So unique from the others so far. Sweet, decadent cream. Mango lassi, pineapple, melon and pepper. Rich cream, faint honey, some nuttiness and a dollop of clay smoke.

2018 | Edition 14

Predominantly candy banana on nose and taste – weird but enjoyable. Strong pepperiness without lingering spiciness or burn. Maybe some other notes of tropical fruit, that all eases out on medium finish.

Unique for an espadin. Good change-of-pace sipper for the price – a bit too unique for standard cocktails.

Lote : 23
Year : 2018
Nose : Dust, ash and leather. Evolving into mint and gaz??
Taste : cameralized agave, vanilla, and a burnt note.
Finish : again gaz. Very unpleasant.
Must be a bad batch judging from previous reviews.

Banana. It’s in the aroma and the taste followed by a rich full mouth and flavour. Some richer flavours perhaps chocolate can follow. Little burn (45%) making it a nice sipper Smoke is low and more on the back palate to remind you that this agave spirit is a mezcal. 2018 Edition 19. Bottle 141/300. Master Distiller: Valentin Cortes, Gregorio Martinez.

Nose: complex, heavy on the smoke, leather and even a hint of petrol maybe?
Mouth: sweetness, cherry and other fruits (berries?), herbaceous and spicy (allspice and a hint of juniper).

Edition 18. I got to meet these two Mezcaleros at their Palenque on the outskirts of Santiago Matatlán. I remember loving their Espadin then and I love this bottle as well. For me this is all tree fruits and spice. Vanilla , clove, and cherries. There’s also a little bit of bell pepper and jalapeño which reminds me of a Tepextate but it’s very subtle and in the background. Very nice.

Edition 11, Bottled in 2017, 48% ABV. Herbaceous and a little sweet, with hints of vanilla and baking spices. Complex, but not chaotic, with enough going on to keep it interesting. I like to offer a taste of this to people who think they don’t like mezcal. They’re usually surprised. It’s just downright pleasant to sip on.

Another delicious mezcal from Nuestra Soledad – this expression is full of sweet spice and sour cherry. There are nice vanilla notes with dried orange peel. Finishes smooth.

Stars are given here with other single village Espadin as category of comparison.
There are 6 different single village espadin releases by Nuestra Soledad, (similarly as Alipus and del Maguey).
closed, soft floral aromas. cherry. banana. subtle sweet aromas. no hint of smoke.
cucumber. melon water. apple/pear.
On the palate:
smooth. hint of cherry. tangy. ashy minerality. balanced. supple & rich yet with lift.
delicious. agua de frutas. cohesive alcohol to feminine structure.
gunpowder minerality. bright bitter, dry finish.

Lot GMJES01210315NS. This is a very hot espadin that has sharp notes of ash and pepper. The aroma is vegetal and the mouthfeel is light but almost oily. The heat from this mezcal doesn’t last long in the mouth, making the overall experience smoother than other mezcals that carry a similar peppery taste. You can almost taste the wild agave tepeztate that is grown nearby. This is definitely a unique espadin. The bottle I tried was from 2015, edition 06.
