About this mezcal

OAX Original Tepeztate is made from Maguey Tepeztate (A. Marmorata) from San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca, Mexico. Cultivated at the agave’s premium and brought to distillation at the maturity point, the plants were ~25 years old.

OAX Original

OAX Original is a mezcal meant to be experienced. Unboxing an OAX bottle is unveiling a piece of art, exclusive and unique, carefully packed in a custom cardboard box for protection. Their bottle is inspired by vernacular Mexican architecture, a blend between the mysterious monolithic pre-Hispanic architecture and Euro-American Modernist design, spearheaded by Luis Barragán and presently embodied in the work of architects Frida Escobedo, Mauricio Rocha and Gabriela Carrillo, among others. Made out of ceramic, their bottle and full packaging have been produced in Mexico.

Clean, sweet nose, identifiable as tepeztate but more honeyed and friendly and not quite the balls-to-the-wall pepper-bomb that can happen with this character of an agave. Floral, key lime pie [tangy yogurt], fresher Serrano peppers without heat, jalapeño seeds, soft hand soaps, ah dang this is actually really really lovely and competent. White tea, lightly dried citrus zest, and something woody / twiggy round off the profile.

Sweet, honey and sharp lime all over, a nice light finish leaning more on peppers and fresh wood tones, jalapeño seed. Tangy lactic notes dance around nicely.

I’m actually shocked at how wonderful this is. I wonder what higher proof would’ve done.

Wasn’t expecting to like this. The bottle is a bit pretentious and it is quite expensive… who is getting most of that retail cost? Also, the ABV is low for a Tepeztate. However given all that.. it is an enjoyable sip. The balance is nice. I get some of the classic green pepper Tepeztate notes along with grapefruit peels, vanilla bean, and celery. As Jonny noted, there is definitely a smoke element. For $190/bottle it’s certainly overpriced compared to bottles of Tepeztate from other brands which are higher ABV and have more complex flavors. Maybe the unique bottle is the trade-off? They don’t list many production details on the back label which is unfortunate. If the price was better and/or the brand was more transparent, I’d rate higher. Lot TPZ1A. 44% ABV.

Lot TPZ1A. 44% ABV. Smells nice. Aromas of orange peel, lemon, and lime. More aromas of sweet vanilla bean and macadamia. The palate is also very citric, with notes of orange and apple juice with lots of smoke. There’s a heavy smoke element to this, more so than with most I’ve had recently. I’m not getting a lot of the peppery notes I typically associate with Tepeztate, but this has some really nice fruity notes.
