Palenqueros Espadin – Sierra Negra is produced by Don Baltazar Cruz Gomez at his palenque in San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca. Don Balta has been producing for many years and has been bottled by several different exported brands. His signature flavor notes and texture seem to shine in each one of them.
Palenqueros Mezcal
Palenqueros Mezcal is marketed as Single Palenque mezcal, meaning that it’s produced by a single mezcalero at a single distilling facility. The brand is a collaboration project between Tradición Chagoya, which owns and operates other mezcal brands like Donaji and Los Cuerudos, and Velier Italia, an Italian spirits company.

Nose – Creamy and cheesy, sweet and earthy – strong butterscotch tones, with notes of cream cheese, wet earth, leather, and tamarind.
Palate – Sweet, spicy, earthy, smoky – cinnamon, cloves, orange rind, melon, and tobacco.
Finish – A charred funky sweetness – anise, Peking duck.
Really great Mezcal that improved than when it was fresh: to note, this sat on the shelf for a few months before this review was written. It was a lot hotter back then, it’s much more mellower now; the flavors are allowed to shine through much better.

Hint of melon and bitter almond, allspice, light smoke, lightly smoked. Pretty good structure and lingering aftertaste of roasted agave and fresh sugarcane like you get from rhum agricole.

Jalapeno (verging on tomatoes), mint, and lime zest on the nose. The palate opens up with malt-like earthy sweetness and is followed by some more jalapeño and green bell pepper. It’s quite punchy, and almost breath-mint like at times. The finish is quite mouthwatering, and introduces some corn meal on the finish.
This is a really solid and enjoyable mezcal!
