Pelotón de la Muerte Pechuga is produced in the state of Guerrero by mezcalero Rodolfo Obregón. It is produced using a field blend of wild Guerrero agaves: Maguey Criollo y Ancho (A. Angustifolia Rubescens y A. Cupreata). The agaves are roasted and distilled together. Next, aromatics hung from the arabic still on 2nd distillation. This Obregón family recipe is a vegan pechuga; no meat is added. This mezcal has herbaceous flavors along with notes of wild agave.
Pelotón de la Muerte
The Pelotón de la Muerte label is the flag The Doliente Hidalgo, a banner that represented the insurgent army call “The squadron of death”, which sought revenge for the murder of the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The red in the flag represents the blood of the leader, the black cross represents the mourning for the priest Dolores, and the bones honor his remains. Pelotón de la Muerte is from Mezcales de Leyenda and geared towards the cocktail scene.

The orange notes are very loud and mask whatever else this mezcal is trying to do. Might be interesting in a cocktail, but unless you’re a huge fan of citrus, not for sipping.

705 reviewsLot 02ROD1020. Aromas of Sunny D, Sprite, and orange Tootsie Pops. The palate is super juicy. Notes of orange creamsicle and orange soda. The orange flavor really dominates this, not in a bad way, but it’s tough to decipher anything else going on beneath the surface. The agave flavors are entirely masked. I like this as a wild card mezcal in my closet, but it will never be a regular sipper for me. Absolutely worth a taste, however.

Palate: Like biting into a navel orange slice and chasing it with a single chocolate chip. There’s nothing complex about this orange heavy elixir but it works. Only knock is the alcohol finish is a tad bit rough. Overall it’s solid and I dig how unique it is. I reckon this would be an insane mezcal margarita mixer.

Ruby red grapefruit, navel orange, meyer lemon, grenadine. It’s the Sunny Delight of Mezcal, except there’s no trace left of any Mezcal flavor. I could probably sip this on ice by the pool on a hot day, and I have never before said that about a Mezcal. As Tyler said “Citrus Mezcal” would be more accurate than Pechuga. Like Soloagave’s friend I would have guessed citrus vodka in a blind tasting.

86 reviewsWas excited to try this batch but its just an overpowering flavor of orange and lemon starburst candy. The flavoring is so potent it almost seems artificial. I would say this is one of the worst bottle investments I’ve ever made. I gave it to a friend without telling him what it was and he thought it was flavored vodka. Go for their other new release and avoid this unless you’re putting it in a cocktail.
