About this mezcal

Real Minero Largo, Espadin, Coyota, Becuela, Tobala is an Ensamble made with 43% maguey Largo (Karwinskii), 30% Espadin (Angustifolia), 12% Coyota (A. Sp – essentially uncategorized), 9% Becuela (Marmorata), and 6% Tobala. The black label of this mezcal indicates that it is an Ancestral Mezcal, while most of their other releases are Artisinal Mezcal. Essentially this means that rather than using a shredder to mill the cooked agave, they milled this batch by hand with mallets. While there are other stipulations to being considered Ancestral, the shredding of agave is the only reason Real Minero doesn’t call all of their mezcal Ancestral. Milling by hand rather than a shredder creates an enormous amount of (literally) back breaking work. This mezcal was distilled in December of 2017.

Real Minero

Real Minero (previously Mezcal Real Minero) is considered by many to be one of the world’s finest mezcal producers. The Angeles family has been making mezcal for several generations in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca. Their mezcal is made in small clay pot stills, and almost all of it is rested in glass for several months before bottling, giving the mezcal a much softer character. Outside of creating great spirits, they also have one of the largest and most diverse sustainable agave reforestation programs. With the help of the community, they’ve been able to rescue several agave varieties that were previously thought to be extinct. The ABV of each batch may vary slightly, so check your bottle for details.

In 2020, the brand began dropping the word “mezcal” from their labels. The term “traditional” replaces the CRM “ancestral” designation. Shortly thereafter, the brand officially parted ways with the certification process; all future releases will be labeled as “agave spirits” or something similar. Despite the label changes, nothing significant about their production process has changed over years.

Batch ARM-01 / btl 74/242 / 54%

I LOVED this ensamble. It had so much complexity and so much Oomph behind it. Definitely some fun agave varieties were used in this ensamble, I would try again!

Nose – Smoked gruyere. Sprite soda. Parmesan cheese.

Palate – Shaved asiago cheese. Dark chocolate and chocolate mousse together but more so in the background. Serrano pepper level heat hits midway but fades quickly to a pleasant level. I love the clay notes in this, most that I really enjoy are sweet whereas this is a unique savory-forward minerality. A lasting funky smokiness in the finish and aftertaste. Very nicely done!

Needless to say at such a high price point you have hefty expectations and this ensamble is my favorite. Really cool mouth feel, some balanced baking spice, and just enough cacao sweetness. Expensive – absolutely – delicious – absolutely.

The citrus and smoke on the nose is deceiving; the palate is just smoke without much nuance (and I love smoke, but this one is just dull to me). It’s not bad, but there are better mezcals at this price point (and much cheaper ones that drink similarly).

Batch ARM-01, distilled December 2017. It starts out sweet with notes of peach and honey, but then it’s quite dominated by the high ABV. While the alcohol is rather warming than burning the throat, I find that it overpowers the flavours (citrus, coffee, earth) that are pushed to the background. A tasty mezcal but lacking a bit of balance to earn a higher score.

A real 5 star for me–very complex. I taste primarily savory notes and spice, but the nose is a little more on the fruit/floral end. Not something like the Reina Sanchez Tequiliana fruity/floral, but it’s there. Up there with Neta, Almamezcalera SLP, and the Espadin/Largo/Barril/Arroqueno ensemble by RM for best I’ve ever had.

Was very excited to try this. Everything from Edgar I’ve tried has been tasty. I get molasses and hazelnut. Very pricey, which is why I’m holding my score back.

Love Real Minero and am starting to enjoy the releases from Edgar. His mezcals are at a higher ABV. This 54% mezcal is graceful and full of flavors. This mezcal is like a nutty brandy with notes of pepper, cinnamon, and toffee. This is really tasty but not quite a 5 star for me; it’s also quite expensive.

Real Minero makes some of the best clay pot mezcals out there, to where you notice its clay pot but not overwhelming. This was a really nice ensamble

Arm-01. Quite good. Citrus and funk. Orange peel, asiago cheese, wet earth. My favorite of the three Real Mineros I tried, but not a five for me.

Absolutely cannot believe this is 54%. The other reviews are correct, this is fantastic. Supplants Barril/Cuishe ensamble as the best ensamble from RM. Palate is smooth and earthy, but the finish is the star of the show here. A myriad of skittles flavor along with some citrus and funk to round it out.

A top 5 mezcal for me

Totally agree with Squashplayer’s analysis of this one. It’s super soft yet big and round and viscous. I get similar notes of cinnamon, leather, and some heavy notes of dark chocolate and dates. A bit of spearmint and more dark chocolate toward the end of the taste as well. This is deep and earthy. It’s like a wet jungle morning after a dew. This is a stellar ensamble!

Wow! When you consider all the labor that went into making this mezcal, it’s hard not to be in awe when first tasting it. This wonderful ensamblé starts off with sweet cinnamon and leather notes. Then comes the soft mint and fruit flavors. It finishes with a wet clay earthiness and subtle coffee aromas. There is a lot going on here with all the different unique agaves in this bland. Amazingly smooth with no burn despite a whopping 54% ABV. Congratulations Edgar Angeles Carreño, Don Lorenzo would be proud! Batch ARM-01,2017, 242 bottles
