Rey Campero Mezcla Salvaje

Rey Campero Mezcla Salvaje is made in very small batches due to the rarity of the wild maguey Jabali, Tepextate, and Sierra Negra used in this mezcal.

About this mezcal

Rey Campero Mezcla Salvaje is an ensamble of wild maguey Jabali, Tepextate, and Sierra Negra. These three agave are rare and they are almost never seen together as an ensamble. These three agave are most commonly seen as single-varietal expressions. Previous batches of this mezcal were released under the “Herencia de Sánchez” label that is available in Mexico, and like Rey Campero, is owned and operated by maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. The first Rey Campero release of this mezcal was made in August 2015 and contained just 138 bottles.

Rey Campero Mezcal

Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

Notes of French bread mid-palate. Chamomile tea. It was hard for me to pick out individual agaves. Tasted at Mosto in SF a while back but didn’t catch the batch number. This is expensive and underwhelming compared to the Jabali-Tepextate ensamble and the other recent ensamble with agaves Cuishe-Tepextate-Espadin.

batch D5002-3M from Aug ’15, bottle 131/138. citrus without any of the acidity, old books, dried chiles, faintly waxy. the sweetness on the palate has a bit of an aspartame-like medicinal quality i’m not in love with. very complex and interesting, more so than it is delicious. wanted to like this more based on how much i love rey campero’s jabali and tepextate. still very good and very unique.

Very Good! Initial nose reminds me of cantaloupe. Nice lemon-lime flavor with a hint of mint. Spicy peppers with some sweetness on the finish. A truly wonderful expression of these three rare agaves bringing out the best in each of them. Bottle 6 of 138 from August 2015.

Absolutely incredible!!! The nose has notes of dusty dry oranges and lime crisps. Whoa! This is all over the palate. It has some unique dynamics that I’ve never tasted in mezcal. Strong notes of cinnamon, lime, chili peppers, and tomatillo. It pulls in sweet and spicy directions at once and is incredibly complex. This is absolutely fantastic. Batch DS002-3M.
