About this mezcal

Rey Campero Sierra Negra is a newer release from Casa Sanchez. Due to the extreme limited availability of the agave Sierra Negra, this mezcal was originally only available in Mexico, but a batch first came into the US in 2018. The agave Sierra Negra takes about 25 years to mature and it is no longer commonly used in mezcal due to over harvesting and a general lack of availability.

Rey Campero Mezcal

Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

June 2019
Lote : DS006-CR
Nose : a nice wallop of molasses, bagasso, dark chocolate and slightly vegetal
Taste :a little boozy, brown sugar, figs, and cinnamon.
Finish : dry, ashy and more cooked agave
I would say this is as good as their Jabali.

June ‘19 bottle #107/572
Tropical fruits, toasted chilis and earth on the nose.
Initially smoky and quite boozy but the alcohol dies down after a couple sips. Roasted and ripe pineapple, jalapeño spice and a white chocolate sweetness. Roasted chili and mint on the finish.

One ounce sample with no batch number. This reminded me of Charanda Mexican Rum, grassy and boozy, 80% dark chocolate that toed the line of being too bitter but pulled it off, black pepper, fig newtons, and unfortunately a bit of nail polish remover that kept it from scoring higher for me. Good Mezcal though.

BTL: 1071/1180
Lot D5003-CR
November 2017
Initial nose of white rum/sugar cane, some citrus peel.
On the palate it’s a bit muddled. Not getting a ton of flavour definition. Definitely showing its 49.3% ABV.

Overall the nose is quite nice but I’m not in love with it.

Bottle 889/997 from August 2015

Lime, Sugar Cane, hint of pepper on the finish. Lot a minor notes I can’t quite pick out. Maybe it’s dark chocolate or some other dark flavor. I could argue this is the most complex mezcal I have had to date. Dropped it one star because it has almost no smoke. I prefer a more smokey mezcal.

Very complex, nose it and you’d think is Pechuga. Frontal assault of sugarcane and pinole transitioning to mole, dark chocolate and finishing with spicy Serrano fire. Very smart spirit.

This was a 250ml flask bottle I bought to top up my 1 litre customs allowance with a 750ml. Not pine, not mint, somewhere in between. Middling nose, sweet palate, nice finish and very little smoke in the overall body.

wonderful.fits the americana profile.scent is slight with cotton candy and and green pepper.the entry is very sweet agave with wild flowers.mid way opens up with some slight black pepper and the finish is very clean with more agave and sugar.sweet from start to finish but not overly.extremely easy to drink all evening.unique but very much americana.
