Rey Campero Tepextate + Cuishe + Espadin

Rey Campero Tepextate + Cuishe + Espadin is a special release from Rey Campero and Romulo Sanchez Parada.

About this mezcal

Rey Campero Tepextate + Cuishe + Espadin is the first of what will likely be a series of several “field blends” from maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. The concept of the field blend is that the mezcalero uses whatever agave is ready, rather than waiting for a large amount of a single varietal to make a batch of mezcal. This practice is more in line with how mezcal has historically been produced in many regions, and it allows the mezcaleros, like Romulo, to create some very interesting Ensambles.

Rey Campero Mezcal

Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

lote d5002, october 2018 production date, glass rested 35 months, 50.7% abv

Review #31: Bell pepper, some acidity, lime, watermelon jolly ranchers, grassy, grape powder sugar like from fun dip, rosemary, bubblegum, chipotle, orange, fresh mango.

This is super fun. There’s an exciting back and forth between vegetals and fruits that keeps you on your toes. Masterful blend on this, and I will keep on the lookout for more Tepeztate blends because they’ve been too good to me so far.

Initial nose is of grape candy, followed by green pepper, agave notes.

Taste is a delicious blend of what I love about tepeztate and cuishe, my two favorite types of mezcal. Grape Candy, aromatics, and green vegetation/banana. Balanced out with the Espadilla to give it some salinity and minerality. After the initial sample I went out and bought a bottle.

Glass-rested 34 months.

Lot DS001-ECT, 1280/1858
Sept 2017

Robust nose, green olives, transfers broadly with 51.5 heat and fades smoothly. I’ll keep trying this one. Quite a nice sipper. For the price I paid (104.99) it gets 4 stars. I’ve had better for less but it’s a nice piece if price was immaterial.

Lot: DS001-ECT (Sept. 2017) Bottle: 184/1858
Nose – Extremely well balanced between the tepeztate (sweet & spicy green pepper), cuishe (floral) and espadin (to round ’em out).

Palate – The sweet aspect is like chewing two types of gum – classic bubble gum and Big Red (more cinnamon). Some movie theater popcorn salinity (and slight, slight butteriness) in the finish. Tangy, sweet and ideal heat. I really, really like this ensamble – very enjoyable.

A little spicy, warm. Medium smokiness. Complex and yummy, light caramel flavor. Really good.

Notes of green and notes of pepper. Nothing that stands out too much.

I am used to heavy vegetal tepextate or mineral cuishes. This stands out more like an espadin.

It is not bad, but it also doesn’t carry its value as a $100 bottle.

DS001 ECT. Smelled like wet dog, but not in a bad way. The funk was more on the nose than the tongue. Cucumber, wasabi, medjool dates, and red licorice. I like it!

Lot DS001-ECT by Romulo Sanchez Parada.

Might have been aided by the label but right off the bat I got some strong watermelon. Stuck with me, also I love watermelon so that’s a big plus.

Bubblegum on the nose. Lots of candied lime, grape juice, and sour patch kids. Well balanced. I’m enjoying the recent ensambles from Romulo. Sept. 2017 batch.

Lot DS001-ECT from Sept 2017. Bottle 48/1858.
I had been hearing about the field blends from Rey Campero and was excited to try this. It’s sour on the nose. It is really balanced between the Tepeze, Espadin and cuishe taste. Has a little heat on it, as campero’s do. Very enjoyable.

Lot DS001-ECT from Sept 2017. Bottle 48/1858. Aromas of sour green apples and pineapple. The palate has notes of green spring vegetables and fresh green plants. There’s a bit of punch and pepper. I’m liking this a lot and excited to taste more field blends from Rey Campero.
