About this mezcal

Rosaluna Mezcal Joven is produced in Santiago Matatlan, the “capital of mezcal”, in Oaxaca by siblings JJ and Frida Méndez León Jiménez. Their family has been crafting mezcal for over six generations in the hills of Oaxaca. Rosaluna is a “single-estate” mezcal operation; they grow their own agave plants and then harvest, cook, ferment, distill and bottle Rosaluna from start to finish.

Rosaluna Mezcal

Rosaluna is the brainchild of an American foursome including Freddie Martignetti, an investor and adviser, entrepreneur Pepe Mireles, Terry Lee – former COO at underwear subscription brand, MeUndies, and Nate Brown, a creative director best known for his work with superstars Jay-Z, Drake and Beyoncé.

The brand is carbon neutral, meaning they calculate their carbon emissions every year and pay for those offsets.

Light, basic, watery mezcal. Sipped at La Holly in Austin. More of a mixer but also super light. Didn’t get the batch info.

Subtle aromas roasted agave and burnt sugar. The palate is VERY watery. Notes of light fruit. Not super interesting. Hard pass.

Tastes like the average Mezcal, a little on the stronger side. Mixes well with cocktails

Mezcal mules have been a recent favorite of mine and this mezcal does the trick. Adds that smokiness but not too strong. Very smooth even for shots!

Nose: very standard acetone/white erase marker I have found in many espadins, not overpowering. Palate: thinner texture that leads to a quick sharpness. First sip felt closest to a tequila that I have tasted in a mezcal. Has zip and some lasting burn. Not much flavor beyond. Relatively plain. Maybe good for a tequila lovers intro to mezcal.
