About this mezcal

Se Busca Joven is made from 100% agave Espadin in San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca by maestros mezcaleros Rodolfo and Mary Lopez Sosa. According to the Stoli Group, owner of Se Busca, their mezcal is manufactured at an unnamed distillery that’s owned by the family that has overseen the artisanal production process for generations. This joven mezcal has cooked agave and mesquite on the nose, with nuts, fruit and green vegetables on the palate. It finishes with a mellow spicy kick.

Se Busca Mezcal

Se Busca Mezcal was launched by the Stoli Group, distributors of Stolichnaya Vodka, Cenote Tequila, and a handful of other spirits. Se Busca is marketed as a super-premium mezcal and represents the company’s entrance into the mezcal category. Se Busca means “wanted” and was created to embody the unapologetic, feisty and impactful rebel spirit of the women of the Mexican Revolution. Stoli Group was established in 2013 as the division responsible for the management, distribution and marketing of SPI Groups’s global spirit portfolio. The first bottles of Se Busca Mezcal arrived on shelves in July 2018.

I got a bottle of it as a gift from someone who doesn’t have much knowledge about mezcals. It ain’t terrible, but I didn’t fall in love either.

The dominant note is green bell pepper which makes this mezcal quite specific. It has many green, grassy and herbaceous notes with a touch of spice and hardly any smoke. Certainly not one of the most complex ones but definitly an interesting aroma profile.

NOSE: green bell pepper, mint, white pepper, a touch of smoke
PALATE: green bell pepper, green vegetables, a hint of wood
MOUTHFEEL: silky
FINISH: medium, bell pepper

Lot SBJ003. Smells like an old dusty attic. Not much on the palate. A bit of smoke maybe. Thin. Nothing really offensive here, but also nothing interesting or exciting.

Man oh man I have got to get my hands on the Repo and Anejo after trying this one. I can see why hardcore mezcal fans would find this absolutely boring. There’s almost no smoke….and that’s fine with me. I’m purposely seeking out those mezcal. I’m not a scotch fan and am a huge fan of aged tequilas that don’t taste like whiskeys. The citrus notes on this are overwhelming in a very pleasant way. When I read that the repo and and anejo are aged in French oak my jaw hit the floor. My favorite wood. I’ll get my hands on those you can bet!

Oof. Thin, acrid, lacking balance. Green peppercorn, acrid smoke, thin mouthfeel, lacks enough sweetness. Tacky label. Maybe somebody could make it work in a cocktail but…

Well I took one for the team. I have been waiting for a review to pop up to see if this was worth a try and no one jumped so I did it myself. Honestly this one is very confusing to me. It is complex in the fact that the nose/finish/taste/ are so distinct and different to me personally. On the nose I get a lot of vanilla and nutty vibes. kind of sweet smelling with just a hint of what’s next. When I sip it it doesn’t really remind me of anything immediately I like in a mezcal. In fact it tastes like Mezcal lite. I get some smoke and wood but very lite. So I suppose this would be great for those who struggle with the stronger smokier, more leathery mezcals. It’s not bad but it’s not really great either. I get some smoke and wood but very lite. Those vanilla and nutty notes carry over. It is very hot and spicy to me as well. Just totally confused on this one. I would love to read some one else’s opinion. Also I might add for the price range I feel there are infinitely better choices 2.5 stars right in the middle
