About this mezcal

Siembra Metl Don Mateo Cupreata is made with 100% agave Cupreata. The terroir of Michoacan is characterized by its rivers; the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt with many active, dormant and extinct volcanoes; and the variety of forests from conifer to tropical. The Vieyra Vinata is cut into the side of a hill in the steep highlands above Morelia in the Rio Balsas region surrounded by temperate evergreen forest. The high-altitude climate is characterized by sandy-soil and moderate rainfall. The forest floor is soft with pine needles, moss and a red sandy clay; all of which are influences in the flavor profile of Don Mateo Joven Cupreata. The pungent, smoky-sweet smells of the agave hit the nose like  herbaceous, wet earth. Then, like afternoon in the vinata the palate warms with a silky texture; the flavors of roasting agaves and the resinous pine bark. The finish bursts in different areas of the mouth with fresh cut agaves and the meadows of Pino Bonito. This mezcal is rested in glass for 6 months before being hand-bottled.

Siembra Metl Mezcal

Siembra Metl Don Mateo is mostly produced by Emilio Vieyra in Pino Bonito, Michoacán. Emilio’s distilling practices go back 5 generations. The Vieyra family cultivates their agaves and produces their spirit between the Rio Balsas basin and the Eje Neo-volcanico de la Sierra Madre del Sur. The fields are at an average of 7,500 ft and the Vinata where the spirit is roasted, macerated, fermented, and distilled sits at 7,000 ft. Check your bottle for details as they tend to vary slightly from batch to batch. The Siembra Metl brand also features some rare special edition releases from other producers, and they bottle tequila under the renowned Siembra Azul and Siembra Valles labels.

Like the day after a rain in the desert inspires the smells of aromatic chaparral. The creosote bush & desert sage rise from the dry beginnings.

As Michoacan is to Don Mateo, as is Don Mateo to Cupreata.

December 2015, Lot #20. Bottle 42-204. 46%. RIP Don Jose Emilio Vieyra Rangel.

Nose: Good balance of florality and minerality, there’s a mystifying peppery vegetal agave flavor. On the palette, there’s a metallic taste alongside the damp agave. Smoke and saline ride the edges of the profile. The presentation is on whole balanced. While I respect the producer, this bottling seemed to just come shy of four stars. Affordable (found for ~$40 or so), well worth the experience, and fine for mixing.

Dec ’15 Lot 20. Middle of the fairway easy drinking. Sip, swallow, repeat. However, it lacks the nose and as a result, no anticipatory tingling or salivating from the rear edges of my taste buds. More complex mezcals that I wold rate higher have more of a glycerine mouth feel that spreads over the tongue and there is more lingering over the flavors before swallowing.

this is one that borders between 3 and 4 stars.so i gave it 4.it seems similar to the illegal blanco but with a little more character.not any single note that stands out but a good experience as a whole.nose is subtle and more like an espadin.nice fruit and good balance of sweet and mineral with no smoke.very.very easy to drink.tasty and good price.

Slight fruit on the nose. There are nice notes of pepper, banana, jalapeño, and peat. Very well-rounded cupreata and a great value. 2015 Lot 12.

Found an old bottle of the same batch that I reviewed 7 years ago (see older from 2015 notes below). This one has definitely evolved since then. This is still intensely aromatic with notes of fresh flowers and herbs, sweet cream, rhubarb, sweet potatoes, and raw earth. The palate is where this really shines. This is packed with notes of tropical fruits, strawberries, fresh mint, and tobacco. The mouthfeel is big and robust. Tasting this again in Dec of 2023, after the mezcal further evolved in the bottle for many years, this is an easy 5 stars. My previous review in 2015 was 4 stars (for reference). If you somehow find some of this old batch somewhere, drink it!

Lot 12 from January 2015. This mezcal is intensely aromatic with herbaceous notes of wet leaves and clay. It has a very balanced and well-rounded feel, that I’ve noticed in other mezcal that is aged in glass before bottling. The taste has some of the characteristic copper tones found in other Cupreata mezcals, but the copper doesn’t overpower this mezcal. It’s piney with notes of fresh tropical fruit, pepper, and wet earth.
