Siete Misterios Espadin is hand milled and distilled in a clay pot still. There are not many other clay pot distilled Espadin mezcals currently available.
About this mezcal
Siete Misterios Espadin was the first mezcal expression that Siete Misterios released. While on a trip into the Sierra, they visited the small community of Sola de Vega. The mezcal they tasted there was all hand milled and clay pot distilled, which they noted as giving the mezcal sweeter and spicier features compared to mezcal made in other regions. After tasting this mezcal, they knew that it was the one they needed to release. At about 50% ABV, this mezcal is smooth, and it is always distilled to proof.
Siete Misterios Mezcal
Siete Misterios was founded in 2010 by brothers Julio and Eduardo Mestre with the intent of keeping traditional mezcal production at the forefront of the mezcal industry. The company sources a wide range of mezcals that all highlight a single agave varietal. They are backed by those who are deeply saddened by the industrialization seen in most tequila and some low-grade mezcal, and they’re doing everything in their power to keep the art of the mezcalero alive. The mezcaleros making their bottles change batch to batch, so one batch’s bottles may taste entirely different from the next batch’s bottles. This gives Siete Misterios a lot of variety in it’s bottling as each batch is made by a different person, with agave grown in a slightly different micro-climate, and the mezcal may hold a slightly different ABV. In 2021, the Mestre brothers formed a partnership with Chatham Imports with Chatham becoming the exclusive global sales and marketing agent for Los Siete Misterios, excluding Mexico.

Flavor wise this is enjoyable but doesn’t have quite the finish I would expect from a 50%abv clay pot mezcal.

Palate – Enjoyable funky clay with orange and vanilla notes from the nose. A solid hit of black pepper heat. Extra aged Parmesan cheese. Dry champagne and that lasting black pepper heat in the finish.

Hand milled, clay pot still. Mild sweet nose. On palate some sweetness and licorice or peppermint candy (Good & Plenty). Some smoke, no agave to speak of.
Licorice is not a flavor I want in my mezcal. I’ve tried about a dozen mezcals and this is the first bottle I literally could not finish. Very disappointing, esp. after my great experience with the Pechuga. (Lot ESP09/15)

641 reviewsOnly tried this once and don’t have great notes other than it was tasty and quite strong. I prefer their Doba-Yej over this Espadin for what it’s worth; they are at the same price point. I’ve tried about four of the Siete Misterios offerings and enjoyed them all – hopefully this brand will come to Texas soon!
