About this mezcal

Sombra Reposé is a unique reposado mezcal made with Sombra’s 100% Maguey Espadin Joven mezcal, aged in Bordeaux wine barrels. The wine barrels are sourced from the historic Château Léoville Poyferré, a wine estate in St Julien, France. These wine barrels are filled with Sombra’s Joven mezcal and aged for up to six-months. The result is a mezcal with a rose-colored hue (hence the name Reposé, French for “rested”) and aromas and flavors to match. The Limousin oak wine barrels soften the mezcal and enhance its botanical balance.

Sombra Mezcal

Sombra is Spanish for “Shadow.” The brand was started as a passion project of famed sommelier and wine aficionado Richard Betts. In March of 2017, Davos Brands acquired a controlling interest in the Sombra Mezcal brand. Richard Betts remains a minority equity holder and is the current Global Brand Ambassador.

In 2017, Sombra became one of a few mezcal brands that owns and operates its own palenque with a focus on environmentally friendly production methods. For example, the agaves are crushed with a solar-powered millstone instead of using donkeys as animal labor. Additionally, the Sombra Adobe Brick Project uses agave fibers left over from distillation to create upcycled bricks which are used to build homes for earthquake victims in Mexico.

Delightfully surprised with this. I’m not a huge fan of their joven mezcal so I wasn’t sure what to expect with the reposado. It’s the only reposado mezcal I’ve ever had, so admittedly I’m giving some points for uniqueness. Aging in casks definitely mellowed out the harsh sombra flavors, giving it a richer texture and taste than the joven. Grape musk, caramel, light smoke, with a pleasant, mildly sweet finish. Good for sipping or in a oaxaca old fashioned. Would not recommend in much else. Not my first pick for mezcals but far from my last
