About this destilado de agave

Sotoleros Lechuguilla (Blue Label) from Romel García is made from 100% agave in the small community of Chínipas, Chihuahua. The fertile land in the region grows lemons, papaya, and other tropical fruits which enhance the terroir of the agave growing nearby. The agaves growing in this region are: Agave bovicornuta, A. shrevei, A. vilmoriniana, A. polianthiflora, and A. angustifolia.

Romel works with wild agaves, collecting mature plants and milling them with a mallet. He lets the plants ferment in stone vats for 5 to 8 days. Finally, he distills in stainless steel pots with wooden tops. His lechuguilla carries notes of ripe fruits and mamey.

Sotoleros

Sotoleros is a collection of traditional distillates from northern Mexico, which seeks to represent the tradition, art and culture of the region. Products from this brand began appearing on shelves in early 2021. Sotoleros has a connection with the legendary brand Clande Sotol – the colors on the bottle labels follow a similar pattern too. However, Soloteros is not a “rebrand” and the exact history between the two brands is unknown.

Nose – Rosy. Sugary. A starchy note like fresh cooked pasta. Very vibrant and enticing aromas.

Palate – Tropical banana fruitiness and an arid, desert (dry grass) feel at the same time – quite a unique combination. Raw almond nuttiness. This also has a certain richness like a mezcal made from the quiote (rather than the pina). A long, herbal aftertaste with a hint of vanilla. Pretty awesome sotol!!!

This was a 1.5 oz. sample from top mezcal reviewer and longtime Kenny G enthusiast, Rahkal. Lot 2.

*loved the loaded aromatic profile, very complex, however the palate is a lot more straightforward and simple, yet in nice balance.

Lot 2. Very fruity, but not the usual fruits. Very custardy. I definitely get the Mamey that is listed in the description, also papaya, cherimoya (custard apple), guanabana (soursop), something vegetal like artichoke, and a chocolate milk finish. There’s also something perfumey like walking past the perfume counter in a department store. Very interesting and delicious.
