Tehuana Con Gusano

Tehuana Con Gusano has an agave worm added after distillation. This worm can be controversial in terms of its purpose and history.

About this mezcal

Tehuana Con Gusano is made with cultivated agave Espadin. Mezcalero Petronilo Rosario Altamirano makes this mezcal at his palenque in Las Margaritas, Oaxaca. The agave are cooked traditionally in an underground pit oven, milled by a horse-drawn tahona, fermented in cypress wood, and double distilled in copper. After distillation, this mezcal has an agave worm (un gusano) added. Despite it’s coloration, this mezcal is unaged.

Tehuana Mezcal

Tehuana Mezcal is made by Tradicion Chagoya, which also produces Donaji and Los Cuerudos. From 1950 to 1970, Don Porfirio Chagoya Hernández focused the distribution of his mezcal in the region of the Istmo of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. It was there that he was captured by the natural beauty that characterized the native women from the region, “La Tehuana”, inspiring him to devout this name to his mezcal as a representation of the extravagant dresses worn by these Zapotec women.

Smell — sweet and grassy.
Taste — sweet, chocolaty, packs quite a punch, mineral after taste, slightly salty.
