Tomas Artesanal Reserva

Tomas Artesanal Reserva is a blend of two different mezcals: a joven Espadin and an añejo made with Agave tequilana.

About this mezcal

Tomas Artesanal Reserva is a blend of two mezcals. The first is an artesanal joven Espadin and the second is an añejo Tequilana mezcal. The joven Espadin is produced by maestro mezcalero Roque Cruz and his family in Santa Ana del Rio, Oaxaca. The añejo Tequilana mezcal is produced by maestro mezcalero Don Lupe Castro in Zacatecas. The Agave tequilana añejo is aged in oak barrels for over a year, making the mezcal slightly sweet with notes of vanilla, oak, almond, and caramel. The brand considers this release to be a Joven Abocado Con Madera.

Tomas Artesanal

Tomas Artesanal is named after the familiar version of the Spanish verb tomar. People in Mexico often say Tomo cerveza, meaning I drink (or take) beer or tomas cerveza? meaning you drink beer? Tomas Artesanal literally translates to you drink craft which is the brand’s invitation to the consumer.

Aroma has a mild scent of woody oak and a subtle sweetness to me. On the tongue I get slight oak, pepper, and little cake batter with the finish. Overall a good one to sip on and an interesting combination! This has me interested in more blended mezcals.
Salud!

This is an interesting product idea, a blend from Oaxaca and Zacatecas. Why did they do this? No idea. Is it worth a taste? Of course. Aromas of apple, smoke, Cohiba cigars, and a touch of vanilla. The palate is very light with some caramel sweetness, vanilla, toffee, and cream soda. This is very approachable and easy sipping. Lot 030921-1

Lot: 030921-1
Nose – Red apple. Slightly salty. Tiny bit of oak.

Palate – A light mouthfeel. A balanced sweet, woody entry. Tangy candy note in the middle, reminds me of Nerds candy to a small degree. Burst of vanilla and salted toffee comes through in the finish, nothing crazy, just the right amount. I got my staunch tequila loving friend to try this who is hard on every 40% ABV mezcal I’ve given him – he loved this. That said, and I agree with his assessment, this is an incredibly approachable mezcal. The blend of aged and joven is dialed right in. The potency of the flavors feels like a 43-44% ABV agave spirit, definitely not 40%. This is a flavor-forward, not smoke or ethanol forward, 40% ABV mezcal – a unicorn, in my opinion. Nice frickin’ work Tomas!
