About this mezcal

Tosba Cenizo Mezcal is a unique release because Agave durangensis is not native to the state of Oaxaca where Mezcal Tosba is produced. Edgar and Elisandro, the cousins behind Mezcal Tosba, drove 1500 miles from Nombre de Dios, Durango to their palenque in San Cristobal Lachirioag, Oaxaca with a truck full of Maguey Cenizo (Agave durangensis). The agaves were grown in the rugged terrain of the state of Durango. After being transported to Oaxaca, they were cooked, fermented, and distilled using the wild yeasts and local spring water from Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte region to create this unique batch.

A product of both tradition and innovation, this is an agave spirit that breaks boundaries and reimagines what the terms of “mezcal” can be while remaining under the protected Denomination of Origin. Under CRM regulations, the once-common term “Cenizo” can now only apply to Agave durangensis, endemic to the northern state of Durango. This mezcal has notes of herbs and bubble gum.

Tosba Mezcal

Mezcal Tosba is a microbusiness founded by two cousins from San Cristóbal Lachirioag, Oaxaca, Mexico. While living in Silicon Valley, California in 1999, they were inspired and influenced by the entrepreneurialism that surrounded them. Concerned by the increasing migration from their home region of Cajonos-Villa Alta in the Sierra Juárez mountains, they decided to form a business that would rescue the disappearing mezcal production and bring economic opportunity to the area. Mezcal Tosba is created by using traditional, and what is now called sustainable, agricultural methods of harvesting and distillation passed down by generations of farmers and mezcaleros from the region of Cajonos-Villa Alta of the Sierra Juárez in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Lot 34 (tasted in 2022)
Glad to have grabbed a bottle of this. Unlike any other Cenizo I’ve tried. Like Tosba’s tep, this has quite a lot of fruit flavors in a way that is unexpected – pineapple, orange, mango. In addition though, it has these almost tutti frutti notes like a classic bubblegum. All of this balances out with just a hint of salinity and smoke. This feels off-the wall in a zany/good way. Worth a try if you can find it.

Agree with Zack on the root beer. Dusty mango and licorice too. Very easy down the gullet. Orange juice finish

Nose – Dried pineapple.

Palate – A&W root beer. Big Red gum. A big mix of fruit – like a fresh, tropical punch smoothie. Punches right at it’s weight heat-wise at 50% ABV. The sweet, fruity theme remains long in to the finish along with dried rolling tobacco. The back end gets a bit dry. I’d say this is about 4.25 stars but with the price point I’ll round down in this instance. This is definitely as good as say a Derrumbes or Origen Raiz cenizo from Durango but not quite the value.

This mezcal reminds of the words from Dennis Reynolds, “I’m a 5 star man!” This tastes of all the delicious tropical fruits. Excellent finish. I could drink this for the rest of my life.

Lot 34. Fantastic mezcal! I really love sweeter, fruity mezcals and this is right up my alley. On the nose it smells like you just walked into a candy shop that only sells fruit flavored candy flavors. Tastes mildly like big red and is heavy with tropical fruits with a citrus twist and grilled (maybe smoked) pineapple. Slightly oily mouthfeel but in a good way as it helps all those fantastic flavors linger a little longer.

Lot 34. Big fruit punch nose. Aromas of tropical fruits like pineapple and papaya mixing with candy notes like Airheads, bubblegum, and red tootsie pops. The palate is fruity as well, and a bit sticky in mouthfeel. Fruity notes of plantains, pineapple, guava, and lime. More tasting notes of tobacco and grilled peppers. This is really enjoyable.
