About this mezcal

Tosba Tepextate is made with wild agave Tepextate in the tiny town of San Cristóbal Lachirioag, Oaxaca. The Sierra Juárez mountains that surround the town make a perfect climate and terrain for agave Tepextate, which prefer to grow on the sides of steep slopes and on the sides of cliffs. This mezcal may taste slightly different from other mezcal made with agave Tepextate because the agave are grown among coffee, mango, wild fruit trees and sugar cane. During the 20-25 years that it takes for the Tepextate to mature, they pick up the terroir of these other elements growing near them. The ABV of each batch may vary slightly.

Tosba Mezcal

Mezcal Tosba is a microbusiness founded by two cousins from San Cristóbal Lachirioag, Oaxaca, Mexico. While living in Silicon Valley, California in 1999, they were inspired and influenced by the entrepreneurialism that surrounded them. Concerned by the increasing migration from their home region of Cajonos-Villa Alta in the Sierra Juárez mountains, they decided to form a business that would rescue the disappearing mezcal production and bring economic opportunity to the area. Mezcal Tosba is created by using traditional, and what is now called sustainable, agricultural methods of harvesting and distillation passed down by generations of farmers and mezcaleros from the region of Cajonos-Villa Alta of the Sierra Juárez in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Lot 17/Lot 18 (owned both bottles, review is a compilation of them)
One of my all time favorites and highly unusual for a tep. On the nose you would think this is a pretty typical tep, the usual greenery/fern/pepper smells. On the palate though you get a dark explosion of tamarind, black current mixed with a touch of pepper and a kiss of funkiness (think more like a rhum agricole/clairin ester rotting fruit funkiness, not a racailla lactic funkiness). Lot 17 is a little more veggie/pepper forward and 18 is more fruit forward. Both amazing.

Bought a half liter at their palenque.
Nose – Ancho chili pepper. Dried pineapple.

Palate – Fruitier (and more tropical) than most tepeztates and I love it! Papaya. Dried cherry. Sprite soda. A pleasant spiciness in the finish. Frickin’ great mezcal.

Lot : 17
Nose : Vegetal and earthy. I get bell peppers, some late dusty peat and vinger. Vibrant yet not screaming.
Taste : a little thin. Hardly any smoke. Green and sweet but the tepextate magic is subtle.
Finish : long and powerful, seems to make up for its first impression.

Packs some heat with relatively low alcohol content. And that firey spice stays with you. A bit unbalanced for my taste. Couldn’t discern much beyond the heat… but if you like heat you’ll love this one. Not for me.

Lot 17, Bottle 20, 44.95%

Nose: Hot and metallic at first, but after 10-15 minutes turns lush vegetal – grilled carrots, broccoli, roasted corn and creamy pea soup, seasoned with coriander, basil and cumin. Papaya and honey lend some sweetness, and there’s a wonderful petrichor and sandstone minerality in the background. Light Parmesan funk emerges the longer it sits.

Palate: Sweet leafy greens, plus roasted broccoli and carrots, tart pineapple, clementine and dandelion. Steely minerals, a few drops of motor oil and faint smoke contribute to the overall balance. Medium-thin body.

Finish: Burst of fresh rain and ozone, followed by citrus and dry Chardonnay. Veggies then return with big hits of asparagus, broccoli, cucumber, rosemary and basil, drizzled with olive oil and wrapped in filo dough. Long finish.

This is marvelous mezcal – complex, balanced and evolving, with clear typicity and tremendous staying power in the finish. My only real knock on this is the somewhat thin body. One for the veggie lovers.

One of my favorites from yesterday. Happily finished the bottle off at Todos Santos.

Lot 18 – Bottle 16. Just a touch of funk in the nose, and some pepper in the taste. Apparently fermented downwind from a mango tree and i like to think that impacts the taste, and i need to try more from Tosba.

WOW! Every now and then, you have that reaction, and this one does it for me. As of now, it’s one my all-time favorites. There’s a ton of spicy vegetalness and lots of complexity. Has that typical tepe greenness, but with a nice layer of pepper, jalapeno to go with it. I have a hard time putting my finger on other notes, but that’s one reason I like this one some much. Beyond description for me.

4.5/5 really. Earthy, garden fresh nose. Palate is full of produce section veggies, minerality, and oil. Finish is long with a decent alcohol burn. A little too “veggie” for my tastes, but still a well-crafted mezcal

Rather stunning.
Alluring pure agave nose, then the pepper and dark cherry,
Rather viscous and sweet mouthfeel.

Absolutely worth a try if you see it

You don’t see this one anywhere and I’m tempted to buy as much as possible for myself. This is a unique and delicious tepextate. On the nose, there is a bouquet of fresh chili peppers. The texture is a bit viscous on the palate. There is a subtle wild funk quality to this tepextate that tastes unrefined yet irresistible. There are notes of black cherry, port, toffee, and raw green tea. It is a dark and brooding tepextate and one of my new favorites. Lot 18, Bottle 13.

Lot 18. Green on the nose. Very bright crisp aromas of green peppers and bell peppers. Lots of pepper on the nose. The taste is much different. Slightly charred taste that is much darker with notes of dark cherry, ripe plum, and and juicy, dark mango. I like this a lot but it’s a bit surprising. The nose and palate take you in completely opposite directions. Super interesting mezcal.
