About this mezcal

Verde Momento is made with 8 year old agave Espadin by mezcalero Doroteo Garcia in Tlacolula, Oaxaca. The agaves are cooked in an underground oven using ocote, holm oak, and peppertree which give the mezcal a smokiness desirable for cocktails. After cooking for about 5 days, the agaves are tahona-crushed before being put into 1,500 liter fermentation vats. The natural fermentation can last from 7 to 30 days depending on the production season, the amount of rain, and variations in temperature. Finally, it is doubled distilled in a 500 liter copper still. This mezcal is has notes of grass, soft smoke, and fresh peach. Verde Momento is packaged in many different labels, however they are all the same mezcal.

Verde Momento Mezcal

Mezcal Verde Momento is a project from Mezcal Amaras that extends beyond the mezcal production. Mezcal Amaras pays 20% over market for raw materials, labor, and has a developed a reforestation policy that results in 10 new agaves being planted for every one that is harvested.

LOTE: 1-2021, 43%, 200ml

Nose – Sweet and very mellow. Pool water, chlorine, grapefruit, dry erase marker, wet dirt, and some cream.

Palate – Tangy. The first sips are an initial burst of burnt citrus; orange, tamarind, ginger, and some smoke.

Finish – A bit bittersweet; dark chocolate, tobacco, cigarette butts.

Good value! The smokiness lends itself to being great for cocktails. Decent sipper in the low end, but lacks a tasty punch to hold its own. Great messaging and branding; awesome label art!

Very pleasant wood heavy smoke smell. Extremely light and drinkable. A bit thin in mouth feel. Very traditional smoke flavor, with pretty light heat and tingle.

Great value, very middle of the road but cleanly executed.

Nose is a mix of fruit and gas. Lightly sweet and a little creamy on the palate with a good amount of smoke. The smoke lingers on finish with a light metallic tang. Fairly straightforward, nothing too complex here, but if you ‘re searching for smoke you wont be left disappointed. Approachable, affordable and beginner friendly. Great for cocktails.

High marks for value here- this is not the best mezcal but a solid offering at < $40. I keep a few bottles around to avoid dipping into the more expensive ones. Good enough to sip and affordable enough to mix.

Lote: 1/2020 – Espadin

As one of the few Mezcals that are available at the LCBO in Canada, I’m going to be reviewing this from the perspective of Canadian availability.

This is a solid expression of an Espadin based Mezcal and great entry point for Canadians wanting to explore this agave distillate. Getting some funky vegetal and smokey flavours on the nose. In my opinion best served at body temperature or somewhere between 26-35 Celsius.

When tasting, the first thing you will notice is the smokiness. Verde Momento uses Ocote (pine), Red Oak and Pepper tree in cooking the maguey. This is different from tequila which is usually steamed. These flavours during the roasting are then part of the flavours that develop during fermentation and pass into the 2 distillations that make up this Mezcal.

Aside from the smoke I’m getting a grassy vegetal funkiness. This vegetal decay which may sound offensive is in my opinion quite welcome. This adds a complexity that gives insight into the aging desert plant that makes up Mezcal. Unlike bourbon and scotch that are aged-in-barrel, mezcal is aged in the field. Espadin is grown for 5-8 years before it’s harvested.

Verde Momento also claims that 10% of the profits are returned to the communities for sustainability of the flora that make up the local ecosystems.

At $38 USD, this is a great value and at $60 CAD It may sound expensive but the LCBO has irrational price controls and if a bottle of Jamesons is $38, this is (relatively) a steal at $60.

Just recently picked up – I like it the bottle art a lot and it has a nice up-front flavor but some smokiness/lasting taste was desired. A solid option but I would prefer some others. Decide for yourself! (good for mixers).

Nose: Red apple fruitiness. A tad of ethanol.

Palate: Slight, sweet cream to start and a nice, subtle viscosity. Very strong, lasting smoky aftertaste of leather, brine and cigar.

I like this as a sipper. I’ve seen this going in the $25-30 range – killer value!

Light nose but heaviest characteristic is oak and other wood smoke. Green apple and wintergreen are present, too.

Medium-full palate, nice an oily to coat the mouth and tongue with no burn.

Beautiful complex, smoky flavor with leather. I’m really enjoying this one and even more now that I found out the <US$40 price point.

Tasted neat and on a cocktail, made by Amores (or Amaras here in the US) this is definitelty for mixing, targeting to the young consumers. The brand claims to be true to their sustainability process, growing 10 agaves per each harvested. Different artists featured on each bottle, the bars also keep their funky bottles for water or mixers.

Great for what it is – a solid mixing mezcal. Smoke cuts through, nice agave flavor, sweet finish. Good to have around if you ever make cocktails.

What a great value for a high quality small batch authentic mezcal from Oaxaca. If you know about this one, you know it sells out quickly. They feature art by local artists and each label different! So fun to sip or make cocktails with. Don’t miss it!

Seems to have quite a bit of heads in the cut which lends a dirty salt and pepper profile with decent sweetness and cocktail-friendly levels of smoke. For the price, this makes great palomas and negronis.

There is a noticeable chemical finish here that is like burnt copper. The initial experience is quite nice – sweet cream and agave. I like some of the labels (like the one pictured above). It’s fine I suppose as a mixer given the low price, but there are better options out there.
