About this mezcal

Viejo Indecente Espadin is made with agave Espadin from Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. Like other Viejo Indecente, this mezcal carries notes of ocean breeze and brine with hints of smoke and minerality. The location of the fields where this agave is grown have a high minerality in the soil composition.

Viejo Indecente Mezcal

Mezcal Viejo Indecente is produced in the small community of San Isidro Guishe, within the district of Miahuatlán, in Oaxaca. Jose Lucas, a third generation mezcalero, currently oversees the family-run operation, where he shares the knowledge gleaned from his years of experience with his eleven children.

Don Jose’s son Mario is a builder and traveled through villages in Zacatecas, Jalisco, and San Luis Potosi where steaming is traditional. Mario built his own above-ground oven fueled by natural gas. This production method helps combat deforestation. Steaming also efficiently uses the entire plant because burnt or charred pieces do not need to be removed. Not all of their releases are steamed however. Once a year, the family roasts a batch of Tobala and a batch of Tepextate in their traditional earthen pit.

Lote: 18-ES2 Bottle: 170
Nose – Vibrant, clean & tropical.

Palate – Good initial almost-medium viscosity. Early vanilla and then the sweet notes all but disappear. Hard cooked egg yolk. Dried (crunchy) chow mein noodles. It get’s grassy toward the end and the smoke gets a tad rough. Over-salted celery stick aftertaste with the lingering smoke.

Overall this is OK but I found the nose far exceeded the palate.

Lots of pure agave flavors here with mint and botanical notes. Mid-palate there are a lot of sugary cream notes. This is great for sipping and makes an excellent Mezcal Negroni. Batch 01-17 from 2017, bottle 262.

Smells very clean and sweet. Aromas of green vegetation and thick sweet caramel. Minty on the back of the palate with note of vanilla, cinnamon, and salt on the front of the palate. Tastes of pure cooked agave with no smoke or hints of char. Batch 01-17 from 2017. Bottle 262.
