About this mezcal

Viejo Indecente Madrecuishe is made with wild maguey Madrecuishe that takes 15 years to mature. This mezcal is earthy on the nose with notes of eucalyptus and hay. The taste is fruity and also herbal with very little smoke. Given the long time needed for these agave to mature, this mezcal really demonstrates the terroir of that specific region. Like other Viejo Indecente mezcal, this Madrecuishe carries slight notes of the ocean and brine.

Viejo Indecente Mezcal

Mezcal Viejo Indecente is produced in the small community of San Isidro Guishe, within the district of Miahuatlán, in Oaxaca. Jose Lucas, a third generation mezcalero, currently oversees the family-run operation, where he shares the knowledge gleaned from his years of experience with his eleven children.

Don Jose’s son Mario is a builder and traveled through villages in Zacatecas, Jalisco, and San Luis Potosi where steaming is traditional. Mario built his own above-ground oven fueled by natural gas. This production method helps combat deforestation. Steaming also efficiently uses the entire plant because burnt or charred pieces do not need to be removed. Not all of their releases are steamed however. Once a year, the family roasts a batch of Tobala and a batch of Tepextate in their traditional earthen pit.

2017 Lot: 18-MC2. Velvety, creamy, silky. I get orange creamsicle that gives way to minerals. Really approachable and the price of it makes it very worthwhile to try.

Really awesome Madrecuishe. Very different from what you might be used to. Thick sugar syrup mouthfeel. Citrus bomb like orange Fanta with Topo Chico. There is an amazing mineral spice on the finish. Giving an extra 0.5 star for the price -> $64 USD. Batch 18-MC2 from 2017. Bottle 1269.

First thing that stands out is how creamy and smooth this feels in my mouth. Almost velvety on my tongue which I love. Initially a little peppery and vegetal…very green. Next to no heat or smoke. Finish is sweet, fruity and delicate. This is a real treat.

Creamy mouthfeel. Poblano chile, cilantro, lime pith, parsley, apple jolly rancher candy. Liked it less the more I had, a bit too much of that jolly rancher note for my taste.

Incredible. I’ve had sips from a few different batches and the flavors and complexity seems pretty consistent across them. This is one of the most velvety mezcals I’ve ever tasted. It has this elegant silky cascade over the palate, with rich notes of fresh sweet green agave and minerals. With no smoke, you can really taste the pure agave flavors of this madrecuishe. Some of my favorite mezcals have a gritty exterior that you need to work through in order to get to the rich, more delicate notes. This is not like that. It’s a luxury, delicate experience the whole way through. Definitely one of my favorite madrecuishe mezcals out there.
