About this mezcal

Viejo Indecente Tobala is made from 100% Agave potatorum (maguey Tobala) in San Isidro Guishe, within the district of Miahuatlán, Oaxaca. This release is called “El Mezcal de Doña Clara” to honor to family’s matriarch. Mezcalero Don Jose Lucas and his sons cook the agaves in an underground pit oven, crush the cooked agaves by hand, and ferment the agave fibers along with water in Montezuma wooden vats. After fermentation is complete, it is doubled distilled in copper pots. On the nose, there are notes of cacao and sweet cinnamon. On the palate there are floral notes along with flavors of buttery caramel. The finish has notes of minerals and leather. Only one batch is made each year.

Viejo Indecente Mezcal

Mezcal Viejo Indecente is produced in the small community of San Isidro Guishe, within the district of Miahuatlán, in Oaxaca. Jose Lucas, a third generation mezcalero, currently oversees the family-run operation, where he shares the knowledge gleaned from his years of experience with his eleven children.

Don Jose’s son Mario is a builder and traveled through villages in Zacatecas, Jalisco, and San Luis Potosi where steaming is traditional. Mario built his own above-ground oven fueled by natural gas. This production method helps combat deforestation. Steaming also efficiently uses the entire plant because burnt or charred pieces do not need to be removed. Not all of their releases are steamed however. Once a year, the family roasts a batch of Tobala and a batch of Tepextate in their traditional earthen pit.

Dang this is good. Tobala is a mixed bag for me; the flavor isn’t very distinct like Tepeztate or a Karwinskii, which is fine. This Tobala from Viejo Indecente is luscious. Muy rico. The texture and sugar notes are rich – high viscosity for a mezcal. It’s just like drinking agave sugar juice in a way. The mezcal has that underlying mineral vibe from Miahuatlan. No batch info but this was the first edition released under the brand label. Try it if you see it.

Very soft and delicate on the nose with aromas of bubblegum, sea salt, and fresh flowers on the breeze. The palate is delicate and richly textured. Notes of blueberries, strawberries, whipped cream, and molasses. This has the same silky, exquisite textures I find with other Viejo Indecente as well. Absolutely stunning Tobala.
