About this mezcal
Xicala Mezcal is produced with the 100% agave Espadin grown in the Valley of Tlacolula Oaxaca. This mezcal is cooked in an underground pit and then crushed with a tahona pulled by a mule. After the agave is ground, it is then stored in wooden barrels with a combination of hot and cold water to ferment for eight days. The fermented agave is then mashed and distilled. The first distillation yields low-grade alcohol (20 to 25% APV). The heads and tails from the distillation run are removed. Only the heart of the distillation is kept and it is distilled for a second time to render the final product, which is about 43% APV. Just as in the first distillation, the heads and tails are removed and only the heart is saved. The spirit is then rested for a few months in steel tanks before being bottled. Each bottle of Xicala is adorned with a handcrafted Alebrije.

Modest noise of sweet citrus. Rich, round cooked agave on the palate with some minerality. A short clean finish. This is unmistakenly an Espadin mezcal with no off flavors but ultimately just too gentle and polite for me with nothing that grabs my interest.

1 reviewHad to submit a review on this one after my dive into Mezcals. This was a chance purchase from a Costco liquor visit, and not like many of my guided purchases. Immediately after opening the bottle, I did not get the smoke and notes I was expecting from the mezcal, but more of a rich joven, with citrus notes and agave richness. The smoke was there, just not prominent. Second taste revealed the citrus and peppers, with deep citrus and agave. Mouth feel is pure agave and smoke, with a warm, smoky finish that is remarkably satisfying. It invites another sample. This review marks the finish of a six month finish of Lot xj-06, bottle #1547, and will prompt another purchase for me and my friends. Pure enjoyment, and will be my starter mezcal for friends after 25+ other mezcal samples. May not be my favorite mezcal, but so far it will be the inviting taste I want to entice others into the journey.

2 reviewsLots: xj-06 bottle 07 when you first pour in a shot glass. I immediately get a citrus aroma. Possible tamarind. I don’t think it’s in the recipe but it’s there. Kind of sweet and sour. You don’t smell smoke. Taste is totally different. Although still a slightly sweet and citrus flavor the perfect amount of smoke comes through. The finish is still lingering smoke. Even though it’s joven/young it has a delicious balance of flavor and smoothness. I would buy again at this price point

This seems to be a new offering from the mezcal gods~ Man I just really dig this one tons of smooth character with a warming clean finish. I get Lite blonde woods, Spice, and Fresh agave. The smoke and leather are also lite with a hint of Vanilla which exudes a creamy nature. At the heart of this spirit I get a earthiness. You can taste the time. It’s refined classiness keeps you coming back for more. Better neat than mixed.
